Key Responsibilities

  • Provide high-quality nursing care to companion animals, including monitoring hospitalised patients, administering medications, and performing diagnostic tests.
  • Assist veterinarians during examinations, consultations, surgical procedures, and dental treatments.
  • Prepare and maintain surgical theatres, ensuring sterility and availability of equipment.
  • Educate pet owners on animal care, post-operative instructions, nutrition, and preventative healthcare.
  • Maintain accurate patient records and manage appointment schedules efficiently.
  • Perform laboratory procedures such as urinalysis, haematology, and cytology.
  • Handle emergency situations with calmness and efficiency, providing immediate first aid as required.
  • Ensure the clinic maintains excellent hygiene standards, including cleaning and sterilising equipment.
  • Administer anaesthesia and monitor patients during surgical recovery.
  • Provide compassionate client support, addressing concerns and building rapport.
  • Contribute to team meetings and collaborate on improving patient care protocols.

Required Skills

  • Registered Veterinary Nurse (RVN) qualification, valid in the UK.
  • Minimum of 2 years post-qualification experience in a small animal practice.
  • Proficiency in administering medications and performing basic veterinary procedures.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, both written and verbal.
  • Strong organisational abilities and attention to detail.
  • Ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a team.
  • Compassionate and empathetic approach to animal care and client interaction.
  • Sound knowledge of veterinary drugs, dosages, and their application.
  • Competent in surgical preparation, patient monitoring, and post-operative care.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Advanced diploma or specialisation in a veterinary nursing field (e.g., emergency and critical care, anaesthesia, behaviour).
  • Experience with veterinary practice management software (e.g., VetSpace, RxWorks).
  • A valid UK driving licence.
  • Familiarity with exotic pet care is a bonus.
  • Previous experience mentoring junior nurses or students.
