Job Description

Career.zycto is actively seeking a talented and motivated Firmware Engineer to join our growing team in Nailsea, Bristol. This is an exciting opportunity for an individual passionate about embedded systems and low-level programming to contribute significantly to the development of our next generation of innovative products. As a Firmware Engineer, you will be instrumental in designing, developing, and debugging firmware for microcontrollers and embedded processors. Your work will span the entire product lifecycle, from initial concept and architectural design through to implementation, testing, and deployment. You will be expected to work closely with hardware engineers, software developers, and product managers to ensure seamless integration and optimal performance. Key Responsibilities

  • Design, develop, and test firmware for new and existing embedded hardware platforms.
  • Debug complex embedded systems issues, identifying root causes and implementing effective solutions.
  • Collaborate with hardware engineers to define system architecture, select components, and bring up new boards.
  • Implement communication protocols (e.g., I2C, SPI, UART, Ethernet, USB) for various peripherals and external interfaces.
  • Write clear, concise, and well-documented code following best practices for embedded development.
  • Participate in code reviews, providing constructive feedback and ensuring code quality and maintainability.
  • Develop and execute unit tests, integration tests, and system-level tests to validate firmware functionality and performance.
  • Contribute to continuous improvement initiatives for development processes, tools, and methodologies.

Required Skills

  • Proficiency in C/C++ for embedded systems development.
  • Strong understanding of microcontroller architectures (e.g., ARM Cortex-M, PIC, AVR).
  • Experience with real-time operating systems (RTOS) such as FreeRTOS, Zephyr, or similar.
  • Familiarity with hardware communication protocols (I2C, SPI, UART, CAN, USB, Ethernet).
  • Proficient in using debugging tools (e.g., JTAG, SWD, oscilloscopes, logic analyzers).
  • Ability to read and understand schematics and datasheets.
  • Experience with version control systems, preferably Git.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or a related field.
  • Experience with wireless communication protocols (e.g., Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, LoRa, Zigbee).
  • Knowledge of scripting languages like Python for automation and testing.
  • Experience with low-power design and optimization techniques.
  • Familiarity with functional safety standards (e.g., IEC 61508) or security best practices for embedded systems.
  • Prior experience in agile development methodologies.
