Job Description

We are seeking a highly motivated and dedicated Emergency Response Officer to join our critical team on the breathtaking Quirimba Island within the Quirimbas Archipelago. This is a vital role focused on ensuring the safety and security of residents, visitors, and the delicate ecosystem of this unique island paradise. As an Emergency Response Officer, you will be the first line of defense, responsible for responding to a wide array of emergencies, from medical incidents and natural disasters to search and rescue operations.

Key Responsibilities

  • Respond promptly and effectively to all emergency calls, including medical incidents, fires, water-related emergencies, and natural disasters.
  • Administer first aid, CPR, and other life-saving techniques as required, until advanced medical assistance arrives or patient can be evacuated.
  • Conduct search and rescue operations in challenging terrestrial and marine environments.
  • Assist in the development, implementation, and regular review of emergency preparedness and response plans.
  • Maintain all emergency equipment, vehicles, and facilities in optimal working condition, performing routine checks and reporting any defects.
  • Provide safety briefings and training to staff, community members, and visitors on emergency procedures and preventative measures.
  • Document all incidents thoroughly, completing accurate reports and maintaining logs of activities and observations.
  • Liaise with local authorities, community leaders, and external emergency services as needed during incidents.
  • Participate in regular drills and exercises to test response capabilities and identify areas for improvement.
  • Promote a culture of safety and awareness within the community and among visitors.

Required Skills

  • Proven experience in emergency response, security, or a related field (e.g., military, police, paramedic).
  • Current certification in First Aid and CPR (Advanced Life Support preferred).
  • Strong physical fitness and ability to perform strenuous tasks in various weather conditions.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to remain calm and decisive under pressure.
  • Demonstrated problem-solving abilities and quick decision-making in critical situations.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team, with a high degree of self-motivation.
  • Basic computer proficiency for reporting and record-keeping.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Certified Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) or Wilderness First Responder (WFR) certification.
  • Experience working in remote, island, or challenging logistical environments.
  • Proficiency in Portuguese or Kimwani (local dialect).
  • Water rescue and/or dive rescue certification.
  • Knowledge of local geography, environmental hazards, and cultural practices of the Quirimbas Archipelago.
  • Experience with fire suppression techniques and equipment.
