Key Responsibilities
- Assist in routine navigation duties, including helmsmanship, lookout, and chart corrections as directed by the Officer of the Watch.
- Participate in mooring and unmooring operations, handling lines and anchors safely and efficiently.
- Perform maintenance tasks such as chipping, painting, greasing, and cleaning of deck equipment and vessel structures.
- Conduct regular inspections of safety equipment, ensuring all gear is in optimal working condition and readily accessible.
- Assist with cargo operations, including rigging, lashing, and securing cargo in accordance with safety protocols.
- Engage in emergency drills and procedures, demonstrating proficiency in fire-fighting, abandon ship, and man overboard scenarios.
- Maintain cleanliness and orderliness of the vessel's deck, living quarters, and communal areas.
- Support the overall welfare and safety of the crew, adhering to all company and international maritime safety regulations.
- Operate and maintain deck machinery and equipment, reporting any malfunctions or necessary repairs to senior officers.
Required Skills
- Proven experience as a Sailor, Deckhand, or similar role in a maritime setting.
- STCW Basic Safety Training certification (Personal Survival Techniques, Fire Prevention and Fire Fighting, Elementary First Aid, Personal Safety and Social Responsibilities).
- Valid Seafarer's Medical Certificate (ENG1 or equivalent).
- Strong understanding of maritime terminology, knots, and basic navigation principles.
- Physical fitness and ability to perform demanding tasks in various weather conditions and environments.
- Excellent teamwork and communication skills, with the ability to follow instructions effectively.
- Proficiency in English, both written and verbal, for clear communication aboard.
- Unwavering commitment to safety and strict adherence to maritime regulations and company policies.
Preferred Qualifications
- Proficiency in operating advanced navigation equipment or specialized deck machinery.
- Experience with specific vessel types (e.g., cargo, tug, passenger, offshore support vessels).
- Additional STCW endorsements (e.g., Proficiency in Survival Craft and Rescue Boats, Advanced Fire Fighting).
- Knowledge of GMDSS operations and equipment.
- Basic marine engineering background or demonstrated mechanical aptitude for minor repairs.
