Key Responsibilities
- Operate transit buses safely and efficiently on assigned routes, adhering to schedules and traffic regulations.
- Conduct thorough pre-trip and post-trip inspections of vehicles, reporting any defects or issues promptly.
- Ensure the safety and comfort of all passengers, including those with special needs, by following accessibility protocols.
- Collect fares, issue transfers, and manage passenger counts accurately using onboard equipment.
- Provide friendly, accurate, and helpful information to passengers regarding routes, schedules, fares, and points of interest.
- Maintain a clean and orderly bus interior to enhance passenger experience.
- Respond professionally and calmly to passenger inquiries, complaints, or emergencies, following established procedures.
- Adhere to all traffic laws, company policies, and safety regulations at all times.
- Complete necessary paperwork, including incident reports, daily logs, and mileage records.
- Communicate effectively and regularly with dispatch and operations staff regarding route status, delays, or incidents.
Required Skills
- Valid Class 2 Commercial Driver's License with Air Brake endorsement (or equivalent for British Columbia).
- Clean driving abstract with no serious infractions or suspensions.
- Minimum of 2 years of verifiable professional driving experience (e.g., commercial truck, taxi, or bus).
- Excellent customer service and interpersonal communication skills.
- Ability to work independently, make sound decisions, and follow established procedures.
- Strong geographical knowledge of Courtenay and surrounding areas is an asset.
- Ability to handle stressful situations calmly and professionally.
- Punctual, reliable, and possessing a strong work ethic.
- Physically capable of performing the demands of the job, including sitting for long periods, operating controls, and assisting passengers as needed.
Preferred Qualifications
- Previous experience as a transit bus driver or in public transportation.
- First Aid and CPR certification.
- Knowledge of local transit policies and procedures.
- Experience operating vehicles with accessible features (e.g., wheelchair lifts, securements).
