Key Responsibilities
- Operate and maintain a variety of farm equipment, including tractors, combines, planters, cultivators, sprayers, and other heavy machinery for grain production.
- Perform daily pre-operation checks, routine maintenance, and minor repairs on equipment to ensure optimal performance and minimize downtime.
- Execute field operations such as plowing, discing, planting, fertilizing, spraying, and harvesting according to established protocols and schedules.
- Monitor crop health, identify pests and diseases, and apply appropriate treatments under guidance.
- Assist with grain handling, storage, and transportation, ensuring quality control and proper documentation.
- Maintain detailed records of field activities, chemical applications, yield data, and equipment maintenance logs.
- Adhere strictly to all safety regulations and operational procedures, promoting a safe working environment.
- Participate in general farm duties, including fencing, grounds maintenance, and other tasks as required.
- Collaborate effectively with farm management and other team members to achieve operational goals.
- Contribute to the continuous improvement of farming practices and adoption of new technologies.
Required Skills
- Minimum of 2 years (24 months) of proven experience as a farm operator, specifically with grain operations.
- Proficiency in operating and maintaining modern agricultural machinery, including GPS systems and precision farming tools.
- Strong mechanical aptitude for troubleshooting and performing minor equipment repairs.
- Valid Class 5 driver's license with a clean driving record.
- Ability to work long hours, especially during peak seasons (planting and harvesting), and in varying weather conditions.
- Excellent observational skills and attention to detail for crop monitoring and equipment operation.
- Strong communication and teamwork skills.
- Ability to lift heavy objects and perform physically demanding tasks.
Preferred Qualifications
- Post-secondary education or certification in Agriculture, Agronomy, or a related field.
- Experience with specific grain crops common to Nova Scotia (e.g., wheat, barley, oats, corn).
- Pesticide applicator certification.
- Familiarity with record-keeping software and basic computer skills.
