Key Responsibilities

  • Receive, log, and prepare patient samples (blood, urine, tissue, etc.) for various laboratory tests, ensuring proper identification and integrity.
  • Perform routine and specialized laboratory tests across departments such as Hematology, Clinical Chemistry, Microbiology, Immunology, and Urinalysis.
  • Operate, calibrate, and maintain laboratory equipment and instruments, troubleshooting minor issues as necessary.
  • Adhere strictly to established quality control procedures, analyzing control samples and documenting results accurately.
  • Interpret and report test results in a timely and precise manner, notifying senior staff or clinicians of critical findings.
  • Maintain meticulous records of all tests performed, results, and quality control activities.
  • Ensure compliance with all laboratory safety regulations, infection control policies, and national/international accreditation standards.
  • Prepare reagents, stains, and solutions according to standard operating procedures.
  • Participate in proficiency testing programs to maintain and enhance diagnostic accuracy.
  • Collaborate effectively with pathologists, fellow technicians, nurses, and other healthcare professionals to ensure seamless patient care.
  • Assist in inventory management of laboratory supplies and reagents.

Required Skills

  • Diploma or Bachelor's degree in Medical Laboratory Technology/Science or a related field.
  • Minimum of 3 years of hands-on experience as a Medical Lab Technician in a clinical laboratory setting.
  • Proficiency in performing a wide range of laboratory tests and operating automated analyzers.
  • Strong understanding of quality control and quality assurance principles in a laboratory environment.
  • Excellent attention to detail and accuracy in sample handling, testing, and result reporting.
  • Familiarity with Laboratory Information Systems (LIS) for data entry and retrieval.
  • Knowledge of safety protocols and infection control practices in a clinical lab.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team.
  • Strong communication skills, both written and verbal.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Relevant professional certification (e.g., ASCP, MLSC, or local equivalent).
  • Experience with molecular diagnostics or specialized testing methodologies.
  • Prior experience in an ISO 15189 accredited laboratory.
  • Proficiency in additional languages relevant to the local population (e.g., French, Creole).
