Job Description

We are seeking a dedicated and meticulous Accountant to join our finance team at our Secunda Operations. This full-time role is crucial in ensuring the accuracy and integrity of our financial records, contributing directly to Sasol’s operational excellence and strategic decision-making. The successful candidate will be responsible for a broad spectrum of accounting duties, from preparing financial statements and managing general ledger accounts to assisting with budgeting, forecasting, and compliance. You will play a vital role in the month-end and year-end close processes, performing reconciliations, and investigating discrepancies to ensure all financial data is reliable. This position requires a keen eye for detail, strong analytical capabilities, and the ability to work collaboratively within a complex industrial environment. You will be expected to adhere to all company policies, accounting standards (IFRS), and relevant financial regulations, maintaining the highest levels of professional ethics and confidentiality. Furthermore, you will contribute to process improvement initiatives within the finance department, identifying opportunities for greater efficiency and accuracy in our financial operations. Key Responsibilities

  • Prepare and analyse financial statements, including balance sheets, income statements, and cash flow statements, ensuring accuracy and adherence to IFRS.
  • Manage general ledger accounts, ensuring accuracy, timely reconciliation, and proper classification of all financial transactions.
  • Assist in the preparation of budgets, forecasts, and various financial reports for management review and strategic planning.
  • Conduct month-end and year-end close procedures, including journal entries, accruals, and comprehensive adjustments.
  • Perform regular bank reconciliations and intercompany reconciliations to identify and resolve discrepancies promptly.
  • Ensure strict compliance with IFRS, company policies, and all other relevant financial regulations and statutory requirements.
  • Assist with internal and external audits, providing necessary documentation, explanations, and support to auditors.
  • Identify and implement opportunities for process improvements in financial operations, aiming for enhanced efficiency and accuracy.
  • Collaborate effectively with other departments to ensure accurate financial reporting and maintain data integrity across all systems.
  • Maintain accurate asset registers and manage depreciation schedules in line with accounting standards and company policy.

Required Skills

  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field.
  • Minimum of 3 years of progressive experience in an accounting role, preferably within a large industrial or manufacturing environment.
  • Proficiency in accounting software (e.g., SAP, Oracle) and advanced MS Excel skills.
  • Solid understanding and practical application of International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS).
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, and decision-making skills with an ability to interpret complex financial data.
  • Exceptional attention to detail and accuracy in all financial documentation and reporting.
  • Ability to work independently, manage multiple priorities, and collaborate effectively as part of a diverse team.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills in English, capable of conveying financial information clearly.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Honours degree or a postgraduate qualification in Accounting or Finance.
  • Professional certification such as CA(SA), CIMA, or ACCA.
  • Experience with financial modelling, business intelligence, and data analysis tools.
  • Familiarity with South African tax regulations and compliance.
  • Previous experience in the chemicals, energy, or mining sector.
