Job Description

Career.zycto is seeking a dedicated and experienced Agricultural Officer to join our dynamic team in Vacoas-Phoenix, Plaines Wilhems District. This pivotal role involves ensuring the highest standards of agricultural practice, compliance, and sustainability across various farming operations in Mauritius. As an Agricultural Officer, you will be on the front lines, conducting thorough inspections, offering expert advice, and collaborating closely with farmers, producers, and regulatory bodies to cultivate a thriving and compliant agricultural sector.

Your primary focus will be to uphold food safety, quality control, and environmental stewardship throughout the agricultural value chain. Key Responsibilities

  • Conduct comprehensive inspections of farms, agricultural facilities, and produce to ensure compliance with national and international agricultural standards, food safety regulations, and environmental guidelines.
  • Provide expert technical advice and guidance to farmers and producers on best practices in crop cultivation, livestock management, pest and disease control, irrigation, soil health, and post-harvest handling.
  • Assess and identify potential risks to agricultural production, including crop diseases, pest infestations, and environmental hazards, and recommend effective mitigation strategies.
  • Prepare detailed and accurate inspection reports, including findings, recommendations, and necessary corrective actions.
  • Collaborate with relevant government agencies, industry stakeholders, and research institutions to stay updated on agricultural policies, innovations, and best practices.
  • Develop and deliver educational workshops, training sessions, and outreach programs for farmers on various aspects of modern and sustainable agriculture.
  • Investigate agricultural complaints, issues, and incidents, providing professional assessments and resolutions.
  • Monitor and evaluate the implementation of recommended practices and interventions to ensure desired outcomes.
  • Maintain meticulous records of inspections, advice provided, and follow-up actions.

Required Skills

  • Bachelor's degree in Agriculture, Agronomy, Horticulture, Crop Science, or a closely related field.
  • Minimum of 2 years of proven experience in agricultural inspection, extension services, or an advisory role.
  • In-depth knowledge of agricultural practices, regulations, and challenges specific to Mauritius.
  • Strong understanding of food safety standards (e.g., HACCP, GlobalG.A.P.) and quality control principles.
  • Excellent analytical, problem-solving, and decision-making abilities.
  • Exceptional verbal and written communication skills in English and French.
  • Proficiency in using standard office software (e.g., MS Office Suite).
  • Valid driving license and willingness to travel extensively within the Plaines Wilhems District and across Mauritius for fieldwork.
  • Ability to work independently and effectively as part of a multidisciplinary team.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master's degree in a relevant agricultural discipline.
  • Certifications in food safety, quality management, or environmental auditing.
  • Proficiency in Mauritian Creole.
  • Experience with Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and agricultural data analysis tools.
  • Familiarity with sustainable agriculture, organic farming principles, and climate-resilient practices.
