Job Description

Key Responsibilities

  • Conduct daily farm inspections and report on crop health, growth stages, and potential issues.
  • Assist in the implementation of crop rotation, planting, irrigation, and harvesting schedules.
  • Monitor and manage pest, disease, and weed control programs using integrated pest management (IPM) techniques.
  • Perform soil sampling and analysis, interpreting results to recommend appropriate fertilization strategies.
  • Operate and maintain agricultural machinery and equipment safely and efficiently.
  • Collect and record precise data on crop yields, input usage, and environmental conditions.
  • Support research trials by setting up plots, applying treatments, and monitoring experimental protocols.
  • Provide technical assistance and training to farm laborers on best agricultural practices.
  • Ensure strict adherence to safety regulations and environmental standards in all field activities.
  • Contribute to the development and improvement of sustainable farming practices.

Required Skills

  • Proficiency in crop scouting and identification of common pests, diseases, and weeds.
  • Strong understanding of soil science, plant physiology, and nutrient management.
  • Competence in operating and maintaining farm machinery and equipment.
  • Excellent data collection, record-keeping, and basic analytical skills.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team in various weather conditions.
  • Strong problem-solving abilities and attention to detail.
  • Valid Kenyan driver's license with experience in off-road driving.
  • Familiarity with agricultural software for data management (e.g., farm management systems) is a plus.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Diploma or Certificate in Agriculture, Horticulture, Agronomy, or a related field.
  • At least 2-3 years of proven experience in a similar agriculture technician or field assistant role.
  • Experience with precision agriculture technologies (GPS, drones, sensors).
  • Knowledge of local crop varieties and farming practices in Uasin Gishu County.
  • Fluency in Swahili and English.
