Working as Airport Ground Staff involves a variety of essential duties that contribute to the seamless flow of flights. You will be responsible for the meticulous handling of passenger luggage, from loading and unloading aircraft holds to operating specialist baggage handling equipment safely and efficiently. Beyond the physical demands, you will also play a crucial role in the boarding process, assisting passengers, verifying documents, and ensuring a smooth transition from the terminal to the aircraft. Key Responsibilities
- Safely load and unload passenger baggage, cargo, and mail from aircraft, using appropriate equipment and adhering to weight and balance requirements.
- Operate specialist ground service equipment, including baggage tugs, belt loaders, and pushback vehicles, in a safe and responsible manner.
- Guide aircraft to and from parking stands, utilising appropriate hand signals and communication protocols.
- Assist with the boarding and disembarkation of passengers, checking boarding passes and ensuring compliance with security procedures.
- Provide clear and concise instructions to passengers during boarding, managing queues efficiently and courteously.
- Report any equipment malfunctions, damage to aircraft, or irregularities immediately to supervisors.
- Adhere strictly to all aviation security regulations, health and safety guidelines, and company policies.
- Collaborate effectively with airline staff, air traffic control, and other airport personnel to ensure timely turnarounds.
- Conduct pre-departure checks and ensure the aircraft is ready for its next flight.
- Maintain a clean and organised work environment on the ramp and in baggage handling areas.
Required Skills
- Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced, outdoor environment, often in varying weather conditions.
- Strong physical fitness, capable of lifting heavy luggage (up to 32kg) and performing physically demanding tasks.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills to interact with passengers and team members.
- Proven ability to follow instructions accurately and adhere to strict safety and security procedures.
- A keen sense of responsibility and attention to detail.
- Full UK Driving Licence (preferred for operating ground equipment).
- Must be able to pass a rigorous background check and obtain an Airside Pass.
Preferred Qualifications
- Previous experience in a ground handling, logistics, or airport operations role.
- Familiarity with airport security procedures and regulations.
- Experience operating heavy machinery or vehicles.
- First Aid certification.
