Key Responsibilities
- Assist with the preparation of a wide variety of food items, including washing, peeling, chopping, and portioning ingredients according to recipes and standards.
- Support the Head Cook and other kitchen staff in daily meal service, ensuring timely delivery of food and maintaining presentation standards.
- Maintain high standards of hygiene and cleanliness in all kitchen and service areas, including washing dishes, sanitizing workstations, and cleaning equipment regularly.
- Assist with receiving and storing deliveries, ensuring proper rotation of stock, checking for quality, and adhering to all food safety guidelines.
- Help with setting up and clearing down serving stations and dining areas efficiently and courteously.
- Adhere strictly to all food safety, hygiene, and health and safety regulations and company policies.
- Communicate effectively and proactively with team members to ensure smooth and coordinated kitchen operations.
- Assist with basic cooking tasks under supervision, as experience and confidence develop.
- Contribute to a positive, welcoming, and efficient kitchen team environment, upholding Chartwells' commitment to exceptional service.
Required Skills
- A positive, can-do attitude and a strong willingness to learn new culinary and operational skills.
- Ability to follow detailed instructions and work effectively as part of a diverse and busy team.
- Reliability and punctuality are absolutely essential for maintaining smooth kitchen operations.
- Basic understanding of food safety and hygiene principles, or a keenness to learn quickly and apply them diligently.
- Good communication skills to interact clearly with colleagues and supervisors.
- Ability to work efficiently in a fast-paced environment and handle multiple tasks simultaneously.
- Physical stamina to stand for extended periods, bend, stoop, and lift moderate weights (up to 15-20kg) safely.
Preferred Qualifications
- Previous experience, even minimal or voluntary, in a kitchen, catering, or customer service environment is an advantage.
- Possession of a Level 1 or 2 Food Hygiene Certificate (training can be provided if not held prior to employment).
- An evident interest in cooking, food preparation, and promoting healthy eating.
