Job Description

We are seeking a dedicated and proactive Caretaker to join our team, ensuring the smooth and efficient running of a school facility in Creigiau, Cardiff. This pivotal role involves maintaining a safe, clean, and functional environment for students, staff, and visitors alike. The successful candidate will be the cornerstone of our facility’s upkeep, responsible for a wide array of duties from routine maintenance and security to supporting daily school activities. You will be instrumental in creating a welcoming and conducive atmosphere for learning, responding promptly to issues, and taking pride in the appearance and operational integrity of the premises. Key Responsibilities

  • Perform general maintenance tasks, including minor repairs (e.g., plumbing, carpentry, painting) to ensure the facility remains in excellent condition.
  • Oversee the security of the school premises, including locking/unlocking gates and buildings, setting alarm systems, and monitoring CCTV.
  • Manage and maintain heating, lighting, and ventilation systems, ensuring optimal comfort and energy efficiency.
  • Conduct regular inspections of the building and grounds to identify and address potential hazards or maintenance needs.
  • Organise and manage external contractors for specialised repairs or services, ensuring work meets required standards and safety regulations.
  • Maintain cleanliness standards across the school, including supervising cleaning staff and performing ad-hoc cleaning duties as required.
  • Assist with the setup and dismantling of equipment for school events, assemblies, and meetings.
  • Ensure compliance with health and safety regulations, conducting fire safety checks and maintaining records.
  • Manage stock levels of cleaning supplies, maintenance materials, and equipment.
  • Respond to emergencies and alarm call-outs outside of normal working hours, as part of a rota.

Required Skills

  • Proven experience in a caretaking, facilities management, or similar maintenance role, preferably within a school or public building environment.
  • Demonstrable basic practical skills in various trades (e.g., plumbing, electrical, carpentry, painting).
  • Strong understanding of health and safety regulations and compliance.
  • Ability to work independently, prioritise tasks effectively, and manage time efficiently.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with a friendly and approachable demeanour.
  • A proactive attitude and problem-solving abilities.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Relevant NVQ or equivalent qualification in maintenance, facilities management, or a trade.
  • Experience with CCTV and alarm systems.
  • Basic IT skills for record-keeping and communication.
  • Full clean UK driving license.
