Job Description

Tanganda Tea Company Limited is seeking an visionary and strategic Chief Innovation Officer (CIO) to lead our innovation agenda and drive technological transformation across our entire value chain. Based at our headquarters in Chipinge, Manicaland Province, the CIO will be a pivotal member of our executive leadership team, responsible for identifying, evaluating, and implementing disruptive technologies and innovative business models that will propel Tanganda into a new era of growth and efficiency. This role demands a forward-thinking leader who can foster a vibrant culture of innovation, guide cutting-edge research and development initiatives, and ensure that our strategic objectives are consistently supported by groundbreaking solutions. The ideal candidate will possess a deep understanding of agricultural technology (AgriTech), digital transformation, sophisticated data analytics, and sustainable operational practices, coupled with a proven track record of successful innovation leadership within a complex organizational environment, preferably in the agro-processing or manufacturing sectors. You will be instrumental in championing new ideas, building highly effective cross-functional teams, and establishing strategic partnerships that enhance our competitive advantage, market relevance, and long-term sustainability. Key Responsibilities

  • Develop and execute a comprehensive innovation strategy aligned with Tanganda Tea Company's long-term business goals and market trends.
  • Identify, evaluate, and pilot emerging technologies (e.g., IoT, AI/ML, blockchain, precision agriculture, renewable energy) relevant to agricultural production, processing, supply chain, and new product development.
  • Lead and manage the entire innovation lifecycle, from ideation and conceptualization to prototyping, testing, and scaling successful initiatives.
  • Foster a company-wide culture of innovation, encouraging creative thinking, experimentation, and continuous improvement among all employees.
  • Establish and nurture strategic partnerships with technology providers, academic institutions, startups, and industry experts to accelerate innovation.
  • Oversee the research and development (R&D) portfolio, ensuring projects are strategically relevant, well-resourced, and meet defined milestones.
  • Collaborate closely with executive leadership and departmental heads to integrate innovation into existing operations and new business ventures.
  • Manage the innovation budget, resources, and intellectual property portfolio effectively.
  • Monitor global innovation trends, competitive landscapes, and regulatory changes to identify new opportunities and potential threats.
  • Report on innovation progress, KPIs, and ROI to the Board of Directors and executive team.

Required Skills

  • Proven experience (minimum 10 years) in a senior leadership role focused on innovation, technology strategy, or research and development.
  • Strong understanding of agricultural technologies (AgriTech), food processing, and supply chain innovations.
  • Demonstrable experience in driving digital transformation initiatives and managing complex, cross-functional projects.
  • Exceptional strategic thinking, problem-solving, and analytical abilities with a data-driven approach.
  • Excellent communication, negotiation, and interpersonal skills, with the ability to influence and engage stakeholders at all levels.
  • Experience building, mentoring, and leading high-performing innovation teams.
  • Proficiency in financial management and budget oversight for innovation projects and investments.
  • Knowledge of intellectual property management, patenting processes, and protection strategies.
  • Bachelor's degree in Business Administration, Innovation Management, Agricultural Science, Engineering, or Computer Science.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master's degree or PhD in a relevant field such as Business Administration, Innovation Management, Agricultural Science, Engineering, or Computer Science.
  • Experience working specifically in the agricultural, food & beverage processing, or manufacturing sectors in an emerging market context.
  • Track record of successfully bringing new products, services, or processes to market from concept to commercialization.
  • Familiarity with lean startup methodologies, design thinking, or agile development frameworks.
  • Professional certifications in project management (e.g., PMP), innovation leadership, or digital transformation.
