Job Description
We are seeking a highly skilled and safety-conscious Commercial Diver to join our dynamic team in Lamu, Lamu County. This is a unique opportunity to contribute to vital marine projects in one of Kenya’s most strategic coastal locations, the Lamu Port and its surrounding maritime environment. The successful candidate will be instrumental in executing a range of underwater operations crucial for the maintenance, construction, and inspection of marine infrastructure. This role demands a professional with not only exceptional diving proficiency but also a strong understanding of underwater construction, repair, and salvage techniques. You will be working in diverse underwater conditions, from port areas to open waters, often involving complex equipment and strict safety protocols. Key Responsibilities
- Perform underwater inspections, surveys, and photography/videography of marine structures, vessels, and pipelines.
- Conduct underwater repair, maintenance, and construction tasks including welding, cutting, rigging, and demolition.
- Assist with salvage operations, recovery of submerged objects, and debris removal.
- Operate and maintain a variety of diving equipment, tools, and machinery.
- Adhere strictly to all safety regulations, company policies, and industry standards (e.g., IMCA, ADAS, HSE).
- Prepare detailed dive reports, logbooks, and incident reports as required.
- Participate in pre-dive planning, risk assessments, and post-dive debriefings.
- Work effectively as part of a dive team, demonstrating excellent communication and teamwork.
- Ensure proper maintenance and calibration of diving gear and support equipment.
- Provide emergency first aid and rescue assistance as trained and required.
Required Skills
- Valid Commercial Diver certification (e.g., IMCA, ADAS, HSE recognised equivalent)
- Current Dive Medical certificate (ML5 or equivalent)
- Minimum 2 years (24 months) of demonstrable experience as a commercial diver.
- Proficiency in surface-supplied diving techniques.
- Experience with underwater tools and equipment (e.g., hydraulic tools, airlifts, cutting/welding gear).
- Strong understanding of diving physics, physiology, and decompression procedures.
- Excellent physical fitness and ability to work in challenging marine environments.
- Valid First Aid and CPR certification.
- Ability to work effectively in a team and follow instructions meticulously.
- Strong problem-solving skills and ability to perform under pressure.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience in port construction, offshore oil & gas, or aquaculture diving.
- Advanced certifications in underwater welding or non-destructive testing (NDT).
- Boat handling license or experience operating small marine vessels.
- Proficiency in technical reporting and documentation.
- Knowledge of local marine regulations and environmental considerations in Kenya.
