Job Description
Are you passionate about making a tangible difference in community health? World Vision International is seeking dedicated and empathetic Community Health Helpers to join our team in Tebane, Inhambane. This contract role offers flexible schedules, allowing you to contribute significantly while balancing personal commitments. As a Community Health Helper, you will be a vital link between health facilities and the communities we serve. Your work will directly support the well-being of families and children by promoting healthy behaviors, providing basic health education, and facilitating access to essential health services. You will engage directly with community members, building trust and understanding their unique health needs and challenges. This role involves conducting household visits, organizing small group sessions, and participating in community health campaigns aimed at preventing diseases and improving overall public health. We are looking for individuals who are deeply rooted in the Tebane community, possess excellent communication skills in both Portuguese and local dialects, and are committed to empowering their neighbors through health knowledge and support. You will play a crucial role in gathering basic health data and ensuring that community members are aware of and utilize available health resources. Key Responsibilities
- Conduct regular household visits to provide health education on topics such as nutrition, hygiene, maternal and child health, and disease prevention (e.g., malaria, HIV/AIDS).
- Identify and refer individuals requiring health services to local clinics, health posts, or other relevant support programs.
- Support community-led health initiatives and participate in local health campaigns and outreach events.
- Facilitate group discussions and workshops on health-related issues, encouraging active community participation.
- Collect and report basic health data from households, ensuring accuracy and confidentiality.
- Distribute health promotion materials, such as leaflets, brochures, and educational tools, effectively explaining their content.
- Act as a liaison between community members and local health workers, sharing feedback and addressing common concerns and misconceptions.
- Monitor and follow up on referred cases, ensuring individuals receive appropriate care and support and tracking outcomes.
- Participate in training sessions and regular team meetings to enhance knowledge and skills in community health best practices and organizational protocols.
- Maintain accurate records of activities and submit reports as required.
Required Skills
- Excellent verbal communication skills in Portuguese and Shangaan (or other dominant local Inhambane dialects).
- Strong interpersonal skills and an ability to build rapport and trust with diverse community members, including children and elders.
- Empathy, patience, and a non-judgmental approach to health education and support.
- Basic understanding of common health issues, preventive practices, and the local health system.
- Ability to work independently with minimal supervision and as part of a collaborative team, demonstrating initiative and reliability.
- Literacy and numeracy skills sufficient for basic record-keeping, data collection, and report writing.
- Residency within or close proximity to the Tebane community is essential for effective community engagement.
Preferred Qualifications
- Prior experience in community outreach, volunteer work, or a similar 'helper' role in a health or social development context.
- Completion of basic health education or community development training programs.
- Familiarity with the local socio-cultural context, customs, and traditional practices in Tebane and surrounding areas.
- Demonstrated ability to mobilize and motivate community members towards positive health action.
- Experience working with vulnerable populations, including children, women, and people with disabilities.
