Job Description

We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Construction Earthworks Operator to join our dynamic team at Hwange Colliery Company Limited. In this critical role, you will be instrumental in executing a wide range of earthworks operations vital to our mining and infrastructure development projects. You will be responsible for the safe and efficient operation of various heavy machinery, including but not limited to excavators, bulldozers, front-end loaders, graders, and compactors, to prepare sites, excavate materials, move overburden, construct haul roads, and maintain operational areas.

Your day-to-day responsibilities will involve meticulously following project specifications and safety protocols to ensure precision in all earth-moving tasks. This includes reading and interpreting survey stakes, blueprints, and grade stakes to achieve desired slopes and elevations. You will conduct pre-operational checks on equipment, perform routine maintenance, and promptly report any mechanical issues to ensure continuous and safe operation. Collaboration with site supervisors, engineers, and fellow team members will be essential to coordinate work efforts, optimize workflow, and meet project deadlines. The successful candidate will demonstrate a strong commitment to safety, an impeccable understanding of heavy equipment mechanics, and a proven track record of efficient and productive earthmoving operations in challenging environments. Key Responsibilities

  • Operate heavy construction and earthmoving equipment such as excavators, bulldozers, loaders, graders, and compactors safely and efficiently.
  • Perform site preparation, excavation, trenching, backfilling, grading, and material handling tasks according to project specifications.
  • Conduct daily pre-operational checks, routine maintenance, and minor repairs on equipment to ensure optimal performance and safety.
  • Interpret and work from blueprints, grade stakes, and survey markers to achieve accurate excavation and grading.
  • Adhere strictly to all company safety policies, procedures, and environmental regulations.
  • Communicate effectively with supervisors, engineers, and other team members to coordinate operations and resolve issues.
  • Monitor equipment performance, identify potential issues, and report necessary repairs to the maintenance team promptly.
  • Assist with other general site duties as required to support overall project objectives.

Required Skills

  • Proven experience operating a variety of heavy earthmoving machinery (e.g., excavators, dozers, loaders, graders).
  • Thorough understanding of heavy equipment operation, safety protocols, and maintenance procedures.
  • Ability to read and interpret blueprints, diagrams, and survey stakes.
  • Strong attention to detail and precision in executing earthworks tasks.
  • Excellent spatial awareness and hand-eye coordination.
  • Valid Class 2 Driver's License (or equivalent heavy vehicle license) and relevant operator competency certificates.
  • Ability to work effectively in a team environment and independently with minimal supervision.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Minimum of 3-5 years of experience as an Earthworks Operator in a mining or large-scale construction environment.
  • Relevant trade certificate or vocational qualification in heavy equipment operation.
  • Knowledge of basic hydraulics and electrical systems in heavy machinery.
  • Experience with GPS-enabled machinery is an advantage.
