Key Responsibilities

  • Assist Head Chefs and Cooks with food preparation tasks, including chopping, slicing, dicing, peeling, and portioning ingredients according to recipes and standards.
  • Prepare basic food items such as salads, dressings, cold appetizers, and simple garnishes under direct supervision.
  • Maintain a clean, sanitized, and organized work environment at all times, including washing dishes, operating dishwashers, and proper storage of food items and equipment.
  • Monitor inventory levels of ingredients, supplies, and tools, reporting any shortages or discrepancies to kitchen management promptly.
  • Adhere strictly to all food safety and hygiene regulations, including HACCP principles, to ensure the health and safety of guests and staff.
  • Assist with the plating and presentation of dishes during service times, ensuring visual appeal and adherence to presentation guidelines.
  • Support the setup and breakdown of catering events, including transporting food, beverages, equipment, and serving ware to and from event locations.
  • Safely operate and clean various kitchen equipment, ensuring they are well-maintained and in good working order.
  • Contribute actively to a positive, collaborative, and respectful team atmosphere within the kitchen.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Head Chef or kitchen management to ensure smooth kitchen operations.

Required Skills

  • Basic understanding of kitchen operations, food preparation techniques, and culinary terminology.
  • Ability to follow instructions accurately and efficiently in a fast-paced environment.
  • Strong attention to detail, precision, and a proactive work ethic.
  • Physical stamina and ability to stand for long periods, lift moderate weights (up to 25 kg), and perform repetitive tasks.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to work effectively as part of a team.
  • Flexibility to work various shifts, including mornings, evenings, weekends, and holidays, based on catering schedules and business needs.
  • Commitment to maintaining impeccable standards of cleanliness, hygiene, and organization.
  • A genuine passion for food and a desire to learn and grow within the culinary field.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Previous experience (6-12 months) in a hotel, restaurant, catering kitchen, or similar food service environment.
  • Culinary certificate or diploma from a recognized vocational training institution.
  • Knowledge of local Kenyan cuisine, international dishes, and diverse dietary requirements.
  • Familiarity with various kitchen equipment, utensils, and their safe, efficient operation.
  • Possession of a valid Food Handler's Permit or willingness to obtain one upon employment.
