Job Description
Agrifresh Jamaica Ltd. is seeking a dedicated and enthusiastic Crop Irrigation Assistant to join our farming team in Coopers Pen, Falmouth. This is a critical role that supports our mission to achieve optimal crop health and yield through efficient water management. The Crop Irrigation Assistant will work under the supervision of the Farm Manager and Irrigation Specialist, playing a vital role in the installation, maintenance, and operation of our irrigation systems across various crop fields.
This position requires a hands-on individual who is comfortable working outdoors in diverse weather conditions and possesses a keen eye for detail. You will be instrumental in ensuring that our crops receive the precise amount of water needed to thrive, directly contributing to the quality and quantity of our harvest. Key Responsibilities
- Assist in the installation, maintenance, and repair of various irrigation systems (drip, sprinkler, furrow) as directed by the Farm Manager or Irrigation Specialist.
- Monitor irrigation schedules and ensure proper water application to crops based on soil moisture levels, crop type, and weather conditions.
- Inspect irrigation equipment, including pipes, pumps, valves, and emitters, for leaks, blockages, or malfunctions, and report issues promptly.
- Perform routine cleaning and upkeep of irrigation filters and lines to prevent clogs.
- Operate and maintain basic farm machinery and tools relevant to irrigation activities.
- Record irrigation data, including water usage, application times, and any observations related to crop water stress.
- Adhere to all safety protocols and company policies while performing duties.
- Support other farm operations as needed, contributing to a collaborative team environment.
Required Skills
- Basic knowledge of irrigation principles and practices
- Ability to perform physical tasks, including lifting, bending, and working outdoors in varying weather conditions
- Strong observational skills and attention to detail
- Ability to follow instructions accurately and work independently or as part of a team
- Basic mechanical aptitude for minor equipment repairs
- Good communication skills
Preferred Qualifications
- High School Diploma or equivalent; certification in agriculture or a related field is a plus
- Previous experience (6 months – 1 year) in an agricultural or farming environment, particularly with irrigation systems
- Familiarity with different types of crops and their specific water requirements
- Experience operating small farm equipment
- Valid driver's license (Class B or higher) is an asset
