Key Responsibilities
- Prepare and submit accurate customs declarations for import and export shipments in accordance with HMRC regulations and international trade laws.
- Classify goods using appropriate commodity codes (HS Codes) and determine applicable duties, taxes, and tariffs.
- Advise clients on customs procedures, documentation requirements, tariff classifications, and duty relief schemes.
- Maintain up-to-date knowledge of customs legislation, trade agreements (e.g., FTA, CETA, UK-EU Trade and Cooperation Agreement), and regulatory changes.
- Liaise effectively with HMRC, port authorities, shipping lines, and clients to resolve customs queries and facilitate smooth clearance processes.
- Manage and resolve customs-related discrepancies, appeals, and compliance issues.
- Ensure timely and accurate payment of duties and taxes, and manage deferment accounts where applicable.
- Provide expert guidance on complex customs issues, including origin rules, valuation, and special procedures.
- Maintain meticulous records and documentation for audit purposes.
Required Skills
- Minimum of 4 years of proven experience as a Customs Broker or in a similar customs compliance role.
- In-depth knowledge of UK customs regulations, procedures, and relevant international trade laws.
- Proficiency in customs declaration software and HMRC systems (e.g., CHIEF, CDS).
- Strong understanding of commodity classification (HS Codes) and customs valuation principles.
- Excellent analytical skills with a meticulous attention to detail.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team in a demanding environment.
- Exceptional communication and interpersonal skills, capable of liaising with diverse stakeholders.
- Demonstrated problem-solving capabilities and a proactive approach to challenges.
Preferred Qualifications
- Professional qualification in Customs Compliance, International Trade, or Logistics (e.g., BIFA, CILT).
- Experience with a variety of goods and industry sectors.
- Familiarity with AEO (Authorised Economic Operator) requirements and processes.
