Job Description

The Jamaica Customs Agency, through our recruitment partner Career.zycto, is seeking dedicated and vigilant individuals to join our team as Customs Officers, specializing in Border Inspection. This pivotal government role offers a unique opportunity to contribute directly to national security, economic stability, and the protection of Jamaica’s borders. As a Customs Officer, you will be on the frontline, responsible for enforcing customs laws, regulations, and international trade agreements. Your daily duties will involve meticulous inspection of cargo, baggage, vessels, aircraft, and individuals arriving at or departing from Jamaica. This requires a keen eye for detail, exceptional observational skills, and the ability to act decisively under pressure.

Successful candidates will play a crucial role in preventing the entry of prohibited and restricted goods, interdicting illegal contraband such as narcotics and weapons, and identifying individuals attempting to evade customs duties or violate immigration laws. You will be instrumental in ensuring compliance with import and export procedures, collecting revenue, and facilitating legitimate trade and travel efficiently. The work environment is dynamic and challenging, often requiring shift work, including nights, weekends, and holidays, and involves physical demands typical of border control operations.

Key Responsibilities

  • Conduct thorough inspections of cargo, baggage, vehicles, vessels, and persons at designated ports of entry/exit.
  • Enforce customs laws, regulations, and international agreements to prevent smuggling and illegal activities.
  • Identify and interdict prohibited or restricted goods, contraband, and undeclared items.
  • Assess and collect customs duties, taxes, and fees accurately.
  • Process arriving and departing passengers and cargo efficiently while ensuring compliance.
  • Utilize risk assessment techniques to identify potential threats and suspicious activities.
  • Maintain detailed records of inspections, seizures, and enforcement actions.
  • Collaborate with other law enforcement agencies and government bodies as required.
  • Provide clear and concise information to the public regarding customs procedures.
  • Operate specialized equipment for detection and inspection purposes.
  • Respond to incidents and emergencies in accordance with established protocols.

  • Knowledge of Jamaican customs laws and regulations.
  • Fluency in additional languages beyond English.
  • Experience with cargo handling or manifest review.
