Key Responsibilities
- Perform comprehensive dental prophylaxis, including scaling, root planing, and polishing for adult and pediatric patients.
- Conduct initial patient screenings, oral health assessments, and review medical history to identify contraindications or special needs.
- Apply preventative materials, such as fluorides and sealants, to protect teeth.
- Educate patients on proper oral hygiene techniques, including brushing, flossing, and the importance of a balanced diet for oral health.
- Take and develop dental radiographs (X-rays) accurately and safely.
- Document all patient care, treatments, and findings thoroughly and accurately in electronic health records.
- Sterilize and maintain dental instruments and equipment in accordance with strict infection control guidelines.
- Collaborate with dentists and other dental team members to develop individualized patient treatment plans.
- Provide post-operative instructions and explain prescribed medications to patients.
- Maintain a clean, organized, and welcoming clinical environment.
Required Skills
- Diploma or Degree in Dental Hygiene from an accredited institution.
- Current and valid registration/license to practice as a Dental Hygienist in Zimbabwe (or ability to obtain).
- Proven experience in performing dental prophylaxis and patient education.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills with a patient-centered approach.
- Proficiency in taking and interpreting dental radiographs.
- Strong understanding and adherence to infection control protocols.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
- Compassionate and empathetic approach to patient care.
Preferred Qualifications
- At least 2 years of clinical experience as a Dental Hygienist.
- Experience with various dental software systems (e.g., Dentrix, Open Dental).
- Certifications in local anesthesia administration and nitrous oxide sedation.
- Continuing education in advanced periodontal therapies or patient communication.
- Fluency in additional local languages (e.g., Shona, Ndebele) is a plus.
