Key Responsibilities

  • Perform comprehensive dental prophylaxis, including scaling, root planing, and polishing for adult and pediatric patients.
  • Conduct initial patient screenings, oral health assessments, and review medical history to identify contraindications or special needs.
  • Apply preventative materials, such as fluorides and sealants, to protect teeth.
  • Educate patients on proper oral hygiene techniques, including brushing, flossing, and the importance of a balanced diet for oral health.
  • Take and develop dental radiographs (X-rays) accurately and safely.
  • Document all patient care, treatments, and findings thoroughly and accurately in electronic health records.
  • Sterilize and maintain dental instruments and equipment in accordance with strict infection control guidelines.
  • Collaborate with dentists and other dental team members to develop individualized patient treatment plans.
  • Provide post-operative instructions and explain prescribed medications to patients.
  • Maintain a clean, organized, and welcoming clinical environment.

Required Skills

  • Diploma or Degree in Dental Hygiene from an accredited institution.
  • Current and valid registration/license to practice as a Dental Hygienist in Zimbabwe (or ability to obtain).
  • Proven experience in performing dental prophylaxis and patient education.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills with a patient-centered approach.
  • Proficiency in taking and interpreting dental radiographs.
  • Strong understanding and adherence to infection control protocols.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Compassionate and empathetic approach to patient care.

Preferred Qualifications

  • At least 2 years of clinical experience as a Dental Hygienist.
  • Experience with various dental software systems (e.g., Dentrix, Open Dental).
  • Certifications in local anesthesia administration and nitrous oxide sedation.
  • Continuing education in advanced periodontal therapies or patient communication.
  • Fluency in additional local languages (e.g., Shona, Ndebele) is a plus.
