Cairns Holdings, a venerable leader in Zimbabwe’s FMCG sector, is seeking an exceptional Director of Research & Development to spearhead our innovation pipeline from our Mutare base. In this critical leadership role, you will be instrumental in shaping the future of our product portfolio, driving strategic R&D initiatives, and ensuring our offerings consistently meet and exceed consumer expectations and market demands.
The Director of R&D will lead a dynamic team of scientists, food technologists, and engineers, fostering a culture of creativity, scientific rigor, and continuous improvement. You will be responsible for the entire product lifecycle, from initial concept generation and feasibility studies to formulation, prototyping, pilot production, and successful commercialization. This includes developing novel products, optimizing existing formulations for enhanced taste, nutrition, shelf-life, and cost-efficiency, and implementing cutting-edge technologies and sustainable practices across our operations.
You will play a pivotal role in setting the R&D strategic vision, aligning it with overall business objectives, and translating consumer insights and market trends into tangible product innovations. Collaboration will be key, as you work closely with cross-functional teams including Marketing, Production, Quality Assurance, Procurement, and Sales to ensure seamless product development and launch processes. Furthermore, you will be tasked with managing R&D budgets, overseeing intellectual property strategies, and ensuring all new products adhere to stringent local and international food safety and regulatory standards. Your expertise will directly influence our competitiveness, market share, and reputation for quality and innovation across Zimbabwe and beyond. Key Responsibilities
- Develop and execute the R&D strategy aligned with the company's overall business objectives and market trends.
- Lead, mentor, and develop a high-performing team of R&D professionals, fostering a culture of innovation and scientific excellence.
- Oversee the entire product development process from concept to commercialization, including formulation, testing, and scaling.
- Drive continuous improvement in existing products through ingredient optimization, process enhancements, and cost reduction initiatives.
- Identify and evaluate new technologies, ingredients, and processes to enhance product quality, safety, and nutritional value.
- Ensure all R&D activities comply with local and international food safety regulations, quality standards, and intellectual property guidelines.
- Manage the R&D budget, resources, and project timelines effectively.
- Collaborate cross-functionally with Marketing, Production, Quality Assurance, Supply Chain, and Sales teams to ensure successful product launches.
- Stay abreast of industry trends, competitor activities, and consumer insights to identify new opportunities for innovation.
- Represent the company in external scientific and industry forums.
Required Skills
- Ph.D. or Master's degree in Food Science, Food Technology, Chemistry, or a related scientific field.
- Minimum of 12 years of progressive experience in R&D within the food and beverage manufacturing industry, with at least 5 years in a senior leadership role.
- Proven track record of successful product innovation and commercialization.
- Strong understanding of food chemistry, processing technologies, and sensory evaluation.
- In-depth knowledge of local and international food safety regulations (e.g., HACCP, ISO 22000).
- Exceptional leadership, team management, and interpersonal communication skills.
- Strategic thinker with strong analytical and problem-solving abilities.
- Proficiency in project management and budget administration.
- Demonstrated ability to collaborate effectively with cross-functional teams.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience with sustainable food development practices and clean label initiatives.
- Familiarity with the Zimbabwean and regional African FMCG market dynamics.
- Certifications in Quality Management Systems or Lean Six Sigma.
- Proficiency in relevant R&D software and data analysis tools.
