Job Description
Career.zycto is seeking a visionary and results-driven Director of Research & Development to lead our innovation initiatives in Matabeleland North Province, Zimbabwe. This pivotal role requires an exceptional leader with a proven track record of driving technological advancements and managing complex R&D portfolios from concept to commercialization. As Director of R&D, you will be instrumental in shaping our long-term technical strategy, fostering a culture of continuous innovation, and ensuring our research efforts align seamlessly with market demands and company objectives.
You will be responsible for overseeing the entire R&D lifecycle, from initial ideation and feasibility studies through to prototype development, testing, and eventual integration into our product lines or service offerings. This includes not only direct management of R&D projects but also the strategic allocation of resources, talent development within your team, and the establishment of robust intellectual property frameworks. The ideal candidate will possess a deep understanding of relevant scientific principles and engineering practices, coupled with astute business acumen to identify emerging opportunities and challenges within the African market context.
Working closely with executive leadership, product development, marketing, and operations teams, you will act as a key technological evangelist, communicating complex research findings and strategic directions to diverse stakeholders. Key Responsibilities
- Develop, articulate, and execute the overall R&D strategy aligned with Career.zycto's business goals and market opportunities.
- Lead, mentor, and expand a high-performing team of scientists, engineers, and technical professionals.
- Oversee the entire R&D project portfolio, ensuring timely delivery, budget adherence, and quality outcomes.
- Identify, evaluate, and integrate cutting-edge technologies and research methodologies to maintain a competitive edge.
- Establish and manage strong intellectual property (IP) strategies, including patent applications and trade secret protection.
- Collaborate cross-functionally with product development, marketing, manufacturing, and regulatory teams to ensure seamless transition of R&D projects to market.
- Manage the R&D budget, optimizing resource allocation and driving cost-effectiveness without compromising innovation.
- Stay abreast of industry trends, competitive landscape, and emerging technologies, translating insights into actionable R&D initiatives.
- Represent Career.zycto at industry conferences, academic forums, and with key partners to foster collaborations and enhance our reputation.
- Implement and uphold best practices for laboratory safety, data integrity, and ethical research conduct.
Required Skills
- Minimum of 10 years of progressive experience in Research & Development, with at least 5 years in a leadership or managerial capacity.
- Demonstrated ability to develop and execute strategic R&D roadmaps that deliver tangible results.
- Strong leadership and team management skills, with a focus on talent development and fostering innovation.
- Expertise in project management methodologies (e.g., Agile, Waterfall) applied to complex R&D initiatives.
- Profound understanding of relevant scientific/engineering principles and their practical application.
- Exceptional analytical, problem-solving, and decision-making capabilities.
- Excellent communication, presentation, and interpersonal skills for engaging with diverse stakeholders.
- Proven track record of managing significant R&D budgets and resource allocation.
- Experience in intellectual property management and patent strategy.
Preferred Qualifications
- Ph.D. in Engineering, Computer Science, Material Science, Biotechnology, or a related scientific discipline.
- Experience working within or developing solutions for emerging markets, particularly in Africa.
- Published research, patents, or significant contributions to industry standards.
- Fluency in additional local languages such as Ndebele or Shona.
- Experience securing grants, funding, or partnerships for R&D projects.
