Job Description

This is a pivotal leadership opportunity for an experienced and visionary Director of Research & Development to spearhead innovation at Career.zycto. Based in Murambinda, Manicaland Province, you will be responsible for defining, driving, and executing our comprehensive research and development strategy, ensuring alignment with our mission to advance sustainable agricultural technologies and practices. The ideal candidate will bring a robust blend of scientific expertise, strategic foresight, and exceptional leadership skills to foster a culture of innovation and scientific excellence within our growing team. You will manage a multidisciplinary team of dedicated researchers, scientists, and technical staff, overseeing the entire R&D lifecycle from initial conceptualization through to rigorous product development, testing, and eventual market integration. This critical role requires a deep understanding of agricultural science, strong project management capabilities, and a proven track record of successfully bringing novel solutions and products to fruition. As Director, you will not only guide the technical direction of our projects but also play a crucial role in securing strategic partnerships, managing our intellectual property portfolio, and ensuring that our research efforts translate into tangible, positive benefits for the communities we serve. Key Responsibilities

  • Develop and implement a comprehensive R&D strategy aligned with Career.zycto's overall business objectives, market needs, and sustainability goals.
  • Lead, mentor, and manage a multidisciplinary team of researchers, scientists, and technical staff, fostering a collaborative, innovative, and high-performance environment.
  • Oversee the entire product development lifecycle from ideation, feasibility studies, prototyping, rigorous testing, to regulatory approval and market readiness.
  • Manage R&D budgets, resources, and timelines effectively to ensure projects are delivered on scope, on time, and within allocated financial parameters.
  • Identify emerging technologies, scientific advancements, and market trends relevant to sustainable agricultural practices in Zimbabwe and across Sub-Saharan Africa.
  • Establish and maintain strategic collaborations with academic institutions, industry partners, government agencies, and local community organizations.
  • Ensure strict compliance with all relevant national and international regulatory standards, safety protocols, and intellectual property guidelines.
  • Present R&D progress, project outcomes, and strategic recommendations to senior leadership, external stakeholders, and potential investors.
  • Drive continuous improvement in R&D processes, methodologies, and infrastructure to enhance efficiency and effectiveness.

Required Skills

  • Proven leadership experience (minimum 5 years) in an R&D environment, preferably within agricultural science, biotechnology, or a related field.
  • Strong strategic planning and execution skills with a demonstrated ability to achieve ambitious goals.
  • Excellent project management capabilities, including budgeting, resource allocation, and risk management.
  • Deep understanding of scientific research methodologies, experimental design, and product development processes.
  • Ability to attract, develop, and retain top scientific and technical talent.
  • Exceptional communication, presentation, and interpersonal skills for diverse audiences.
  • Demonstrated ability to translate complex scientific concepts into actionable business strategies and community impact.
  • Proficiency in data analysis, statistical methods, and scientific reporting.

Preferred Qualifications

  • PhD in Agricultural Science, Biotechnology, Agronomy, Soil Science, or a closely related scientific or engineering discipline.
  • Experience working in a developing country context, particularly within Sub-Saharan Africa, understanding local challenges and opportunities.
  • Track record of successful grant applications and securing external funding for research projects.
  • Knowledge of intellectual property management, patenting processes, and technology transfer.
  • Fluency in local languages (e.g., Shona, Ndebele) is considered a significant advantage for community engagement.
