Job Description

We are seeking a diligent and motivated Part-Time Dock Operations Assistant to join our dynamic team in Cumberland, Portmore. This is an excellent opportunity for an individual who is keen to contribute to the efficient flow of goods and support critical logistics operations within a busy port environment. As a Dock Operations Assistant, you will play a vital role in ensuring the smooth and safe handling of cargo, maintaining accurate records, and supporting the overall dock functions. This position requires someone who is physically capable, possesses a keen eye for detail, and can work effectively in a fast-paced setting. You will work closely with our experienced dock supervisors and team members, learning the intricacies of maritime logistics and contributing directly to our operational success. Key Responsibilities

  • Assist with the loading and unloading of cargo from vessels, trucks, and containers using appropriate equipment and strict safety protocols.
  • Verify incoming and outgoing shipments against manifests, bills of lading, and other documentation to ensure accuracy and resolve discrepancies.
  • Perform routine checks on cargo for damage, shortages, or discrepancies, reporting any issues immediately to the dock supervisor.
  • Organize and store cargo in designated areas within the dock or warehouse, ensuring optimal space utilization, accessibility, and adherence to storage guidelines.
  • Operate basic material handling equipment (e.g., pallet jacks, hand trucks) safely and efficiently after receiving proper training.
  • Maintain the cleanliness and orderliness of the dock area, adhering strictly to health, safety, and environmental regulations.
  • Support dock supervisors with administrative tasks, including accurate data entry into inventory systems and maintaining physical records, as required.
  • Communicate effectively and professionally with team members, truck drivers, customs officials, and other stakeholders to ensure seamless operational flow.
  • Actively participate in safety briefings, training sessions, and adhere to all company and port authority safety policies and procedures to ensure a secure working environment.

Required Skills

  • Proven ability to perform physical tasks, including lifting, carrying, pushing, and pulling heavy items (up to 50 lbs) regularly.
  • Excellent attention to detail and accuracy in documentation, cargo verification, and inventory management.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills, capable of working collaboratively in a diverse team environment.
  • Ability to work effectively and efficiently in a fast-paced, sometimes challenging, outdoor environment.
  • Basic computer literacy for data entry and record-keeping.
  • Demonstrated commitment to safety and strict adherence to operational guidelines and procedures.
  • High level of reliability, punctuality, and a strong work ethic for all scheduled shifts.

Preferred Qualifications

  • High School Diploma or equivalent certificate.
  • Previous experience (at least 6 months) in a logistics, warehouse, or port operations environment.
  • Basic knowledge of cargo handling procedures and international shipping safety standards.
  • Valid General Driver’s License (Class B or higher).
  • Forklift operator certification or a willingness to obtain one through company-provided training.
