Key Responsibilities
- Conduct comprehensive ecological field assessments, including wetland delineations, botanical surveys, wildlife surveys (avian, amphibian, reptilian, mammalian), and habitat evaluations.
- Prepare detailed technical reports, environmental impact assessments (EIAs), and ecological management plans in accordance with provincial and federal guidelines (e.g., ESA, DFO, OWA).
- Analyze environmental data, interpret findings, and provide expert recommendations for mitigation strategies, compensation plans, and environmental monitoring programs.
- Collaborate with project managers, engineers, clients, and regulatory agencies to ensure project objectives are met while adhering to ecological best practices and environmental legislation.
- Oversee and participate in environmental permitting processes, ensuring all necessary approvals are obtained for development projects.
- Develop and implement robust monitoring programs to track the success of ecological restoration and mitigation efforts.
- Provide clear, concise, and professional communication of ecological information to diverse audiences, both verbally and in written reports.
Required Skills
- Bachelor's or Master's degree in Ecology, Biology, Environmental Science, or a related field.
- Minimum 3 years of professional experience as an Ecologist in an environmental consulting or similar role in Ontario.
- Demonstrated experience with Ontario's provincial and federal environmental legislation (e.g., Endangered Species Act, Fisheries Act, Ontario Wetland Evaluation System).
- Proficiency in conducting various ecological field surveys (e.g., plant identification, bird identification, amphibian call surveys, SAR surveys).
- Strong technical report writing and data analysis skills.
- Excellent communication skills in English, both written and verbal.
- Valid Ontario Class G driver's license and access to a reliable vehicle for field work.
Preferred Qualifications
- Professional designation (e.g., P.Ag., R.P.Bio., Certified Arborist, Certified Wetland Specialist).
- Experience with GIS software (e.g., ArcGIS, QGIS) for mapping and spatial analysis.
- Familiarity with environmental assessment processes for linear infrastructure projects.
- First Aid and CPR certification.
- Experience with proposal writing and project management.
