As an Emergency Dispatcher, you will operate state-of-the-art communication systems, including multi-line telephones, radio dispatch consoles, and computer-aided dispatch (CAD) software. You will receive emergency calls from the public, ranging from medical emergencies and fires to accidents and critical incidents. Your keen listening skills and empathetic approach will be paramount in obtaining accurate details, while your decisive nature will ensure rapid and effective deployment of emergency services – police, fire, ambulance, or other relevant agencies. Key Responsibilities
- Receive and prioritize emergency calls (999/112) from the public, identifying the nature of the emergency.
- Obtain critical information from callers, often in highly emotional or distressed states, maintaining a calm and reassuring demeanor.
- Accurately input data into Computer-Aided Dispatch (CAD) systems.
- Dispatch appropriate emergency services (police, fire, ambulance) to incident locations efficiently.
- Monitor and track the status and location of dispatched units via radio communication.
- Provide pre-arrival instructions to callers (e.g., CPR guidance, first aid) as per established protocols.
- Maintain clear, concise, and accurate records of all communications and dispatch activities.
- Collaborate effectively with other emergency personnel and external agencies.
- Handle non-emergency calls and provide information or referrals as required.
- Adhere strictly to all operational procedures, policies, and ethical guidelines.
- Work consistently during night hours, including weekends and public holidays, as part of a rotating shift schedule.
Required Skills
- Proven experience in a high-pressure customer service or dispatch role.
- Exceptional verbal communication and active listening skills.
- Ability to remain calm, focused, and effective under extreme pressure.
- Strong multitasking capabilities and ability to prioritize rapidly changing situations.
- Proficiency in using computer systems, including data entry and CAD software.
- Excellent geographical knowledge of Sodnac, Quatre Bornes, and surrounding regions.
- Sound judgment and decision-making abilities.
- High level of integrity, empathy, and professional composure.
- Fluency in English and Mauritian Creole; French is a strong asset.
Preferred Qualifications
- Previous experience as an emergency dispatcher (police, fire, or EMS).
