Key Responsibilities

  • Perform comprehensive eye examinations to assess vision and ocular health for patients of all ages.
  • Diagnose and manage a wide range of ocular diseases, conditions, and refractive errors.
  • Prescribe and accurately fit eyeglasses, contact lenses, and other vision correction devices, offering a variety of solutions.
  • Educate patients on proper eye care, contact lens hygiene, preventative measures, and post-treatment instructions.
  • Utilize and interpret results from advanced diagnostic equipment (e.g., fundus camera, OCT, visual field analyzer, auto-refractor).
  • Maintain accurate, confidential, and detailed patient records in compliance with clinical and ethical standards.
  • Collaborate effectively with other healthcare professionals, optical dispensers, and support staff to ensure holistic patient care.
  • Stay informed about new developments, technologies, and evidence-based treatments in optometry through continuous professional development.
  • Provide exceptional customer service and foster a positive, reassuring patient experience from consultation to follow-up.
  • Manage and oversee patient appointments, schedules, and follow-ups efficiently to optimize clinic operations.

Required Skills

  • Doctor of Optometry (O.D.) degree or equivalent recognized qualification from an accredited institution.
  • Valid registration/license to practice optometry in Mauritius, in good standing.
  • Minimum of 2 years of post-qualification clinical experience in an optometric practice or clinic.
  • Proficiency in conducting comprehensive eye exams, diagnosing ocular conditions, and performing refractions.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication and strong interpersonal skills.
  • Strong patient counseling and education abilities, with a patient-first approach.
  • Ability to work both independently and collaboratively as part of a multidisciplinary team.
  • Exceptional attention to detail, strong organizational skills, and time management capabilities.
  • Proficiency in using a range of optometric diagnostic equipment and instruments.
  • Fluency in English and Mauritian Creole is essential; proficiency in French is a significant advantage.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with advanced contact lens fitting, including specialty and multifocal lenses.
  • Prior experience working in a busy private practice or multi-optometrist setting.
  • Familiarity with electronic health record (EHR) systems and practice management software.
  • Participation in continuing professional development (CPD) activities and professional associations.
  • Demonstrated commitment to community health initiatives or outreach programs.
  • Specialization or advanced training in areas such as low vision, pediatric optometry, or ocular disease management.
