Job Description

We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Sheet Metal Worker to join our dynamic maintenance and fabrication team at Hwange Colliery Company Limited. In this critical role, you will be responsible for the fabrication, assembly, installation, and repair of various sheet metal products and structures essential to our extensive mining and industrial operations. This encompasses everything from ventilation ductwork and safety guards to complex machine components and specialized fittings. The ideal candidate will possess a meticulous eye for detail, a strong commitment to safety protocols, and the ability to interpret technical drawings to produce high-quality, durable metalwork. You will play a vital role in ensuring the operational efficiency and safety of our heavy industrial machinery and infrastructure.

Key Responsibilities

  • Read and accurately interpret blueprints, schematics, and engineering drawings to determine project specifications and material requirements.
  • Measure, mark, cut, bend, and shape sheet metal using a variety of hand and power tools, including shears, brakes, punches, and presses.
  • Fabricate and assemble a wide range of sheet metal products, including ductwork, chutes, hoppers, guards, brackets, and other custom components.
  • Perform various welding techniques (MIG, TIG, Arc) to join metal pieces, ensuring strong and clean seams.
  • Install completed sheet metal assemblies and systems in designated locations, often at heights or in confined spaces, adhering to safety standards.
  • Conduct routine maintenance, troubleshooting, and repair of existing sheet metal structures and equipment.
  • Ensure all work is performed in compliance with company safety policies, industry regulations, and quality standards.
  • Operate and maintain sheet metal fabrication machinery and equipment safely and efficiently.
  • Collaborate effectively with engineers, welders, pipefitters, and other tradespersons to complete projects efficiently.
  • Maintain a clean and organized work area and correctly dispose of scrap materials.

Required Skills

  • Proven experience as a Sheet Metal Worker in a heavy industrial or manufacturing environment.
  • Proficiency in reading and interpreting blueprints, schematics, and technical drawings.
  • Expertise in measuring, cutting, bending, and shaping various gauges of sheet metal.
  • Strong welding skills (MIG, TIG, Arc) and familiarity with different metal types (e.g., steel, stainless steel).
  • Ability to safely operate a range of sheet metal tools and machinery (e.g., shears, press brakes, rolls).
  • Excellent spatial reasoning and mathematical skills for precise measurements and calculations.
  • Strong understanding of safety procedures and protocols in an industrial setting.
  • Physical stamina and dexterity to perform demanding tasks, often involving lifting, standing, and working in various positions.
  • Attention to detail and a commitment to producing high-quality workmanship.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Relevant trade qualification or apprenticeship completion in Sheet Metal Work.
  • Experience working within the mining, power generation, or heavy manufacturing sectors.
  • Familiarity with computer-aided design (CAD) software for reviewing or simple modifications of designs.
  • Valid driver's license.
  • Basic First Aid certification.
