Job Description
Are you passionate about working with the land, nurturing growth, and contributing to a sustainable future? Morija Guest Houses & Tours is seeking a dedicated and enthusiastic Farm Assistant to join our dynamic team in Morija, Maseru. This pivotal role involves supporting the daily operations of our gardens and small-scale farm, ensuring the health and productivity of our crops, and contributing to the overall beauty and sustainability of our property. You will be an integral part of a team that values hard work, environmental stewardship, and community well-being. This is a hands-on position requiring physical stamina, a keen eye for detail, and a commitment to maintaining high standards of agricultural practice. You will work closely with other team members to implement planting schedules, manage irrigation, assist with harvesting, and ensure the upkeep of farming equipment and infrastructure. Key Responsibilities
- Assist with planting, cultivation, and harvesting of various crops (vegetables, fruits, herbs).
- Perform regular weeding, pruning, and pest control using organic and sustainable methods where possible.
- Operate and maintain basic farming equipment and tools safely and efficiently.
- Manage irrigation systems, ensuring optimal water distribution for different plant types.
- Prepare soil for planting, including tilling, fertilizing, and soil amendment.
- Monitor plant health, identifying and addressing issues such as disease or nutrient deficiencies.
- Participate in general farm maintenance, including fence repair, clearing land, and keeping work areas tidy.
- Assist with the care of small livestock, if applicable, including feeding and cleaning.
- Maintain accurate records of planting, harvesting, and other farm activities.
- Adhere to all safety protocols and environmental regulations.
Required Skills
- Basic knowledge of agricultural practices and plant care.
- Physical fitness and stamina to perform demanding outdoor work in varying weather conditions.
- Ability to operate basic hand tools and farm equipment.
- Strong work ethic and reliability.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
- Attention to detail and a proactive approach to problem-solving.
- Willingness to learn and adapt to new farming techniques.
Preferred Qualifications
- Previous experience (6+ months) working on a farm or in a similar agricultural setting.
- Knowledge of organic farming principles.
- Basic understanding of irrigation systems.
- Valid driver's license (Lesotho code).
- Proficiency in Sesotho and English.
