Job Description

Mphatlalatsane Agricultural Cooperative is seeking a dedicated and energetic Farm Assistant to join our team in Maputsoe, Leribe. Key Responsibilities

  • Assisting with planting, cultivating, and harvesting various crops according to seasonal schedules and supervisor instructions.
  • Operating and maintaining basic farm machinery and equipment, including hand tools, small tractors, and irrigation systems.
  • Performing daily livestock care tasks, such as feeding, watering, cleaning pens, and monitoring animal health under supervision.
  • Implementing irrigation schedules and techniques to ensure optimal crop hydration and water conservation.
  • Conducting general farm maintenance, including fencing repairs, weeding, clearing fields, and maintaining farm structures.
  • Assisting with the preparation of land for planting, including tilling, fertilizing, and soil amendment.
  • Monitoring crops and livestock for signs of disease, pests, or stress, and reporting findings promptly to supervisors.
  • Participating in post-harvest activities, including sorting, cleaning, packaging, and preparing produce for market.
  • Ensuring compliance with farm safety regulations and cooperative operational guidelines at all times.
  • Maintaining a clean, organized, and safe work environment for all farm operations.

Required Skills

  • Proven practical experience in a farming or agricultural setting.
  • Ability to perform physically demanding tasks, often outdoors, in various weather conditions.
  • Basic understanding of agricultural practices, including crop cycles and animal husbandry.
  • Strong work ethic, punctuality, and reliability.
  • Ability to work effectively both independently and collaboratively as part of a team.
  • Good communication and observational skills to report issues and follow instructions.
  • Willingness to learn and adapt to new farming techniques and technologies.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Valid driver's license, especially for operating farm vehicles or machinery.
  • Specific experience with local crops (e.g., maize, beans, vegetables) or livestock (e.g., cattle, sheep, poultry) prevalent in Lesotho.
  • Knowledge of basic first aid and emergency procedures.
