Job Description

Career.zycto is actively seeking a highly skilled and dedicated Farm Equipment Operator with extensive experience in tractor handling to join our growing agricultural team in Kisumu County, Kenya. This pivotal role involves the precise and safe operation of a variety of farm tractors and associated implements across our diverse farming operations. As a Farm Equipment Operator, you will be instrumental in executing critical tasks such as ploughing, harrowing, planting, cultivating, spraying, and harvesting, ensuring optimal land preparation and crop yield. Your expertise will directly contribute to the efficiency and success of our agricultural projects.

Key Responsibilities

  • Operate various types of farm tractors and associated implements (ploughs, harrows, planters, sprayers, cultivators, harvesters) safely and efficiently.
  • Perform daily pre-operation inspections, routine maintenance, and cleaning of tractors and equipment, including checking fluid levels, tires, and basic component functionality.
  • Execute field operations such as tillage, planting, fertilization, pest control spraying, and harvesting according to specific agricultural plans and schedules.
  • Monitor equipment performance and make adjustments as necessary to ensure optimal output and product quality.
  • Report any mechanical faults, breakdowns, or operational issues to the farm supervisor promptly.
  • Adhere strictly to all farm safety regulations and operating procedures to prevent accidents and ensure a safe working environment.
  • Maintain accurate records of work performed, fuel consumption, and equipment usage.
  • Assist with minor equipment repairs and troubleshooting in the field.
  • Collaborate with farm management and other team members to achieve production targets and operational goals.
  • Ensure proper storage and security of farm equipment when not in use.

Required Skills

  • Proven experience operating a diverse range of farm tractors (e.g., 2WD, 4WD) and implements.
  • Strong understanding of agricultural practices and field operations.
  • Ability to perform basic mechanical troubleshooting and preventative maintenance on farm machinery.
  • Demonstrated commitment to safety procedures and practices.
  • Excellent hand-eye coordination and spatial awareness.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Physical stamina and ability to work long hours, especially during peak seasons, in various weather conditions.
  • Valid Kenyan driving license with relevant categories for agricultural machinery.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Certificate or diploma in Agricultural Engineering, Farm Management, or a related field.
  • Experience with GPS-guided farming equipment or precision agriculture technologies.
  • Knowledge of local crop cycles, soil types, and pest management in Kisumu County.
  • Prior experience operating heavy machinery beyond tractors (e.g., excavators, loaders).
  • First Aid and CPR certification.
