Key Responsibilities

  • Assist senior Fisheries Technicians and Biologists with fieldwork, including fish sampling, habitat assessments, and water quality monitoring.
  • Operate and maintain field equipment such as nets, electrofishing gear, GPS devices, and data loggers.
  • Accurately collect, record, and organize field data according to established protocols.
  • Prepare samples for laboratory analysis and assist with basic lab procedures.
  • Conduct routine equipment calibration, cleaning, and preventative maintenance.
  • Adhere strictly to all safety guidelines and protocols during fieldwork and in the office/lab.
  • Participate in data entry, basic report preparation, and quality control checks.
  • Maintain clear communication with team members and supervisors regarding project progress and challenges.
  • Demonstrate a proactive approach to learning new techniques and methodologies in fisheries science.

Required Skills

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Demonstrated interest in environmental science, biology, or conservation.
  • Ability to perform physically demanding work in various outdoor weather conditions.
  • Strong attention to detail and accuracy in data collection and recording.
  • Excellent teamwork and communication skills.
  • Basic computer proficiency (e.g., Microsoft Office Suite).
  • Valid G-class driver's license with a clean driving record.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Currently enrolled in or recently completed a post-secondary program in Environmental Science, Fisheries, Biology, or a related field.
  • Previous experience with fieldwork or outdoor activities.
  • Knowledge of basic fish identification or aquatic ecosystems.
  • First Aid and CPR certification.
