As our Fishmonger, you will serve as the vibrant focal point of our seafood department, orchestrating the journey of our products from ocean to plate. Your responsibilities will begin with the meticulous inspection and reception of fresh seafood deliveries, ensuring every item meets our stringent quality standards. Key Responsibilities
- Receive, inspect, and safely store fresh seafood deliveries, verifying quality and quantity.
- Expertly clean, scale, gut, fillet, and portion a variety of fish and shellfish according to customer requests and product standards.
- Prepare visually appealing and well-stocked seafood displays, ensuring optimal freshness and presentation.
- Provide exceptional customer service, offering informed advice on seafood selection, preparation, and cooking methods.
- Maintain impeccable hygiene and sanitation standards in the seafood department, adhering strictly to food safety regulations (HACCP/FSMS).
- Monitor inventory levels, minimize waste, and ensure proper stock rotation to guarantee product freshness.
- Operate and maintain cutting tools, scales, and other equipment safely and effectively.
- Assist with general counter duties, including pricing, labeling, and customer inquiries.
- Collaborate with the wider store team to ensure a seamless and positive shopping experience.
Required Skills
- Proven experience as a Fishmonger or in a similar seafood preparation role (1+ years).
- Exceptional knife skills and precision in handling various types of fish and shellfish.
- Strong knowledge of different fish species, their characteristics, and seasonality.
- Excellent understanding and practice of food hygiene and safety standards.
- Outstanding customer service and communication skills.
- Ability to work efficiently in a fast-paced retail environment.
- Physical stamina to stand for long periods and lift heavy items as needed.
Preferred Qualifications
- Relevant certification in food safety or handling.
- Fluency in both English and French (Creole also an advantage).
- Experience in stock management and inventory control within a retail setting.
