Job Description
ZAFNREMA is seeking a dedicated and passionate Forest Conservation Worker to join our team in Mtambwe, Pemba North. This vital role offers the unique opportunity to contribute directly to the protection and restoration of Pemba Island’s rich forest ecosystems. As a Forest Conservation Worker, you will be on the front lines of our conservation efforts, engaging in hands-on fieldwork, community outreach, and ecological monitoring. This means you will have the ability to work with your supervisor to set a schedule that allows for variable start and end times, or compressed workweeks, depending on the needs of the project and personal availability. Your work will involve patrolling forest areas, monitoring wildlife, identifying threats such as illegal logging or poaching, and assisting in reforestation initiatives. Additionally, community engagement is a cornerstone of our approach; you will participate in educational workshops and awareness campaigns to foster a shared understanding of conservation principles among local residents. Key Responsibilities
- Conduct regular patrols of designated forest areas to monitor ecological conditions and identify potential threats.
- Collect and record data on forest health, biodiversity, and human activities (e.g., logging, farming encroachment).
- Participate in tree planting, reforestation, and habitat restoration projects.
- Assist in the removal of invasive species and implement measures to prevent their spread.
- Engage with local communities to raise awareness about forest conservation, sustainable resource use, and ZAFNREMA's initiatives.
- Support the organization of community workshops and educational programs related to environmental protection.
- Report findings, observations, and incidents accurately and promptly to the supervisory team.
- Maintain conservation equipment and tools in good working order.
- Contribute to the development and implementation of conservation management plans.
Required Skills
- Proven experience in fieldwork, particularly in rural or remote environments.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to interact effectively with diverse community members.
- Basic computer literacy for data entry and reporting.
- Physical fitness and ability to walk long distances over varied terrain, often in challenging weather conditions.
- Proficiency in Swahili (written and spoken).
- Demonstrated passion for environmental conservation and sustainable development.
Preferred Qualifications
- Diploma or Certificate in Forestry, Environmental Science, Natural Resource Management, or a related field.
- Familiarity with GIS and GPS tools for mapping and data collection.
- Knowledge of Pemba's local ecosystems, flora, and fauna.
- Previous experience working with community-based conservation projects.
- Ability to speak other local languages or dialects common in Pemba North.
