Key Responsibilities
- Provide a safe, stable, and nurturing home environment for children and young people.
- Meet the daily physical, emotional, and developmental needs of the foster child/youth.
- Work collaboratively with social workers, schools, health professionals, and birth families (where appropriate).
- Support children's educational progress, including homework and school attendance.
- Facilitate and supervise contact visits with birth families as per care plans.
- Attend regular training sessions, support meetings, and review meetings related to the child's care.
- Administer medication and manage health appointments as required.
- Promote the child's social development, self-esteem, and cultural identity.
- Maintain accurate records and reports on the child's progress and needs.
- Advocate for the child's best interests in all aspects of their care.
Required Skills
- Deep empathy and understanding for children who have experienced trauma.
- Exceptional patience, resilience, and emotional stability.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills to work with children, families, and professionals.
- Ability to provide a consistent and structured home environment.
- Commitment to ongoing learning and professional development.
- Flexibility and adaptability to respond to varying needs of children.
- Valid driver's license and access to a reliable vehicle (preferred but not always essential).
- Cultural sensitivity and ability to support diverse backgrounds.
Preferred Qualifications
- Previous experience raising children or working with children/youth in a professional capacity (e.g., teaching, childcare, healthcare).
- Knowledge of child development and attachment theory.
- Experience with children who have special needs or challenging behaviours.
- Certification in First Aid and CPR.
- Fluency in additional languages relevant to Vancouver's diverse population.
