Job Description

Shepherd Construction (Pvt) Ltd is seeking a dedicated and experienced Full-Time Carpenter to join our dynamic construction team in Gweru, Midlands Province. As a Carpenter, you will be an essential part of our on-site project execution, responsible for crafting, constructing, and installing various wooden structures and fixtures with precision and adherence to safety standards. Your expertise will be crucial in ensuring the structural integrity, aesthetic appeal, and functional utility of our diverse construction projects, which range from residential housing to commercial and institutional buildings.

This role requires a meticulous individual with a strong understanding of carpentry techniques, materials, and tools. You will be expected to interpret blueprints and technical drawings, measure and cut materials accurately, and assemble frameworks, roofs, wall studs, floorings, doors, and window frames. Beyond the fundamental construction elements, your skills will extend to finish carpentry, including the installation of skirting boards, architraves, cabinetry, and other interior fittings that contribute to the final quality and finish of a project.

Key Responsibilities

  • Read and interpret blueprints, drawings, and sketches to determine specifications and calculate requirements.
  • Measure, cut, shape, assemble, and join wood materials and substitutes like drywall and plastic.
  • Construct, erect, install, and repair structures and fixtures of wood, plywood, and wallboard.
  • Build foundations, install floor beams, lay subflooring and erect walls and roof systems.
  • Install doors, windows, stairs, mouldings, and hardware.
  • Inspect and repair damaged wooden structures or furniture.
  • Operate hand and power tools safely and efficiently.
  • Estimate heights, widths, lengths, and other proportions.
  • Maintain a clean and safe work environment.
  • Collaborate with other construction professionals such as electricians, plumbers, and general labourers.

Required Skills

  • Proficiency in reading and interpreting blueprints and technical drawings.
  • Extensive experience with hand and power tools common in carpentry.
  • Strong understanding of construction methods, safety procedures, and quality control.
  • Excellent mathematical skills for measurements and calculations.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Physical strength and stamina for demanding tasks.
  • Attention to detail and precision in workmanship.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Certificate or Diploma in Carpentry or a related trade.
  • Valid First Aid and CPR certification.
  • Experience with various types of wood and composite materials.
  • Previous experience working on large-scale commercial or residential projects.
  • Knowledge of local building codes and regulations.
