Job Description

We are seeking a highly skilled and dedicated Full Time Electrician to join our dynamic Public Works Department within the County Government of West Pokot. This pivotal role involves the installation, maintenance, repair, and troubleshooting of electrical systems and components across various county-owned facilities, including administrative offices, hospitals, schools, water treatment plants, and public lighting infrastructure. The successful candidate will be instrumental in ensuring the safe, efficient, and uninterrupted operation of electrical services essential for the daily functioning of our public services. You will be responsible for adhering strictly to national electrical codes, safety regulations, and best industry practices, contributing directly to the well-being and safety of our community members. Key Responsibilities

  • Install, maintain, and repair electrical wiring, equipment, and fixtures in accordance with relevant codes and safety standards.
  • Inspect electrical systems, equipment, and components to identify hazards, defects, and the need for adjustment or repair.
  • Diagnose malfunctioning systems, apparatus, and components, using test equipment and hand tools to locate the cause of a breakdown and correct the problem.
  • Plan layout and installation of electrical wiring, equipment, and fixtures, based on job specifications and local codes.
  • Connect wires to circuit breakers, transformers, or other components.
  • Ensure all electrical work meets safety standards and regulations.
  • Perform preventative maintenance on electrical systems to minimize downtime and ensure operational efficiency.
  • Read blueprints or technical diagrams and follow specifications.
  • Respond to emergency electrical breakdowns and service calls promptly.
  • Maintain detailed records of work performed, materials used, and inspections.
  • Collaborate with other departments and contractors as needed on multi-disciplinary projects.

Required Skills

  • Craft Certificate in Electrical & Electronics Engineering (Power Option) or equivalent from a recognized institution.
  • At least 3 years of demonstrable experience as a qualified electrician.
  • Proven knowledge of the Kenya Electrical Wiring Regulations and other relevant safety standards.
  • Strong troubleshooting and diagnostic skills for electrical faults.
  • Ability to read and interpret electrical blueprints, schematics, and technical manuals.
  • Proficiency in using a variety of electrical testing equipment and hand tools.
  • Excellent understanding of safety procedures and protocols related to electrical work.
  • Valid artisan electrical license (e.g., from Energy and Petroleum Regulatory Authority – EPRA).

Preferred Qualifications

  • Diploma in Electrical Engineering.
  • Experience working with public sector infrastructure or large institutional facilities.
  • Knowledge of generator systems and alternative energy sources (solar, wind).
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Valid driving license with experience driving in rural terrains.
