Job Description

We are seeking a vibrant and dedicated Part-Time Garden Centre Assistant to join a welcoming team in Croydon, London. Key Responsibilities

  • Assist customers with plant selection, provide care advice, and answer gardening-related queries with enthusiasm and accuracy.
  • Perform general plant maintenance duties including watering, feeding, pruning, and repotting to ensure plant health and vibrancy.
  • Receive, unpack, and price new stock, ensuring it is displayed attractively and correctly according to merchandising guidelines.
  • Maintain the cleanliness and tidiness of the garden centre, including plant areas, walkways, and display units.
  • Operate the till and handle customer transactions accurately, including processing sales, returns, and exchanges.
  • Assist with the loading of heavy items for customers, ensuring safety protocols are followed.
  • Monitor stock levels and assist with inventory checks, reporting any discrepancies or low stock items.
  • Contribute to creating inspiring and seasonal displays that encourage customer engagement and sales.
  • Assist with garden centre events and workshops as required, fostering a community atmosphere.

Required Skills

  • A genuine passion for plants, gardening, and horticulture.
  • Excellent customer service skills with a friendly and approachable manner.
  • Ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a team.
  • Good physical fitness, capable of lifting and moving heavy items and standing for extended periods.
  • Basic knowledge of plant care, common pests, and diseases.
  • Reliability and punctuality, especially for part-time scheduling.
  • Strong communication skills, both verbal and written.
  • A proactive attitude and willingness to learn.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Previous experience working in a garden centre, retail nursery, or similar environment.
  • Horticultural qualification or relevant training.
  • Experience operating a till and handling cash/card transactions.
  • Familiarity with various plant types, including annuals, perennials, shrubs, and trees.
