Job Description
We are seeking an accomplished and visionary Head of Engineering to lead our diverse engineering teams in Wajir County. This pivotal role requires a strategic leader with deep technical expertise, exceptional people management skills, and a proven track record in delivering complex, large-scale technology solutions within a dynamic telecommunications environment. The Head of Engineering will be responsible for defining the technical roadmap, ensuring the highest standards of engineering excellence, fostering innovation, and driving the successful execution of our engineering projects aligned with Safaricom’s strategic objectives. You will manage a talented group of engineers, providing mentorship, career development, and fostering a collaborative and high-performance culture. This role is critical in maintaining our technological edge and ensuring our infrastructure and services continue to meet the evolving demands of our customers in the region and beyond. You will be instrumental in bridging technical strategy with business goals, contributing directly to Safaricom’s ongoing success and expansion.
Key Responsibilities
- Develop and execute a comprehensive engineering strategy and roadmap aligned with Safaricom’s overall business objectives and technology vision.
- Lead, mentor, and develop a high-performing team of engineers, fostering a culture of continuous learning, innovation, and technical excellence.
- Oversee the design, development, deployment, and maintenance of critical telecommunications infrastructure, software systems, and digital platforms.
- Ensure the stability, scalability, security, and performance of all engineering solutions, adhering to industry best practices and regulatory compliance.
- Collaborate cross-functionally with product management, operations, marketing, and other departments to ensure seamless project delivery and alignment.
- Manage the engineering budget, resources, and project timelines effectively to ensure efficient allocation and timely completion of initiatives.
- Drive the adoption of new technologies, agile methodologies, and innovative solutions to enhance operational efficiency and customer experience.
- Establish and maintain strong vendor relationships and oversee technology procurement processes.
- Report on key engineering metrics, project status, and strategic initiatives to senior leadership.
Required Skills
- Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, Telecommunications, or a related technical field.
- Minimum of 10 years of progressive experience in software engineering or telecommunications engineering, with at least 5 years in a senior leadership or management role.
- Profound knowledge of telecommunications networks (e.g., GSM, LTE, 5G), cloud technologies (AWS, Azure, GCP), and enterprise software architecture.
- Proven ability to lead, motivate, and manage large, diverse engineering teams.
- Excellent strategic thinking, problem-solving, and decision-making abilities.
- Strong project management skills, including experience with Agile and Scrum methodologies.
- Exceptional communication, interpersonal, and stakeholder management skills.
Preferred Qualifications
- Master’s degree in a relevant technical field or an MBA.
- Experience in a multinational telecommunications company or a fast-paced tech environment.
- Certifications in project management (PMP), cloud platforms (AWS, Azure), or relevant technical domains.
- Demonstrated experience with DevOps practices and automation tools.
