Job Description
Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) is seeking a compassionate and dedicated Health Care Attendant to join our clinical team in Turkana County, Kenya. This full-time clinical role is crucial for providing essential support in our healthcare facilities, ensuring patients receive high-quality care in a challenging environment. The Health Care Attendant will work under the direct supervision of nursing staff, playing a vital role in patient comfort, hygiene, and safety. Your primary responsibilities will involve assisting patients with daily living activities, monitoring vital signs, maintaining a clean and organized clinical environment, and facilitating effective communication between patients, their families, and the medical team. This position demands a strong sense of empathy, excellent interpersonal skills, and the ability to work effectively in a multicultural team setting. Key Responsibilities
- Assist patients with daily personal care, including bathing, dressing, feeding, and mobility.
- Monitor and record vital signs (temperature, pulse, respiration, blood pressure) and report any deviations to nursing staff.
- Maintain a clean, sterile, and organized patient environment, including changing bed linens and ensuring proper waste disposal.
- Support patient nutritional needs by serving meals and assisting with feeding as required.
- Assist nurses and doctors with medical procedures, examinations, and treatments, ensuring patient comfort and safety.
- Provide emotional support and comfort to patients and their families.
- Ensure proper handling and storage of medical supplies and equipment.
- Assist with patient admissions, transfers, and discharges, ensuring a smooth process.
- Maintain accurate and timely documentation of patient care activities.
- Adhere strictly to infection control protocols and safety guidelines.
- Participate in team meetings and contribute to continuous improvement of patient care services.
Required Skills
- Certificate in Health Care Assistance, Nursing Aide, or a related clinical field.
- Minimum of 1 year of practical experience in a clinical or hospital setting.
- Proficiency in basic patient care techniques and vital sign monitoring.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with a compassionate approach.
- Ability to work effectively in a multidisciplinary team.
- Excellent observational skills and attention to detail.
- Basic knowledge of infection control and hygiene practices.
- Fluency in English and Swahili is essential; knowledge of local languages (e.g., Turkana) is an asset.
- Ability to work in challenging and resource-limited environments.
