Job Description

Career.zycto is actively seeking a dedicated and experienced Health & Safety Officer to oversee and enhance safety protocols within a bustling industrial estate in Buff Bay, Portland. This professional role is critical to maintaining a secure and compliant working environment for all tenants and personnel. As a Health & Safety Officer, you will be instrumental in developing, implementing, and monitoring robust occupational health and safety programs that align with local regulations and international best practices. You will be at the forefront of identifying potential hazards, conducting thorough risk assessments, and ensuring that all operations adhere to the highest safety standards.

This position requires a proactive individual with a keen eye for detail and a strong commitment to fostering a safety-first culture. You will be responsible for regular site inspections, incident investigations, and the delivery of compelling safety training sessions. Your expertise will guide management and staff on crucial safety matters, empowering everyone to contribute to a secure workplace. Key Responsibilities

  • Develop, implement, and maintain comprehensive occupational health and safety management systems compliant with Jamaican regulations and international standards.
  • Conduct regular site inspections and audits of the industrial estate to identify potential hazards and ensure compliance with safety policies and procedures.
  • Perform detailed risk assessments for various industrial activities, recommending and implementing effective control measures.
  • Investigate all accidents, incidents, and near misses, determining root causes and developing corrective and preventative actions.
  • Organize and deliver engaging health and safety training programs for staff, contractors, and tenants on topics such as emergency procedures, safe work practices, and hazard communication.
  • Monitor and ensure the proper maintenance and calibration of safety equipment and personal protective equipment (PPE).
  • Prepare and submit statutory reports related to health and safety performance to relevant authorities.
  • Advise management on health and safety matters, promoting continuous improvement initiatives.
  • Lead emergency response efforts, including fire drills, first aid provisions, and disaster preparedness planning.
  • Maintain accurate records of safety inspections, incidents, training, and compliance activities.

Required Skills

  • Proven experience in occupational health and safety management, preferably within an industrial or manufacturing environment.
  • In-depth knowledge of Jamaican OHS regulations and standards.
  • Strong understanding of risk assessment methodologies and hazard control techniques.
  • Excellent communication, presentation, and interpersonal skills.
  • Proficiency in incident investigation and root cause analysis.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a dynamic environment.
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).

Preferred Qualifications

  • NEBOSH General Certificate or equivalent recognized safety qualification.
  • First Aid and CPR certification.
  • Experience with environmental management systems (e.g., ISO 14001).
  • Familiarity with industrial estate operations and diverse manufacturing processes.
