Career.zycto is seeking a highly motivated and experienced Health & Safety Officer to join our professional team, dedicated to ensuring the highest standards of safety within an active industrial estate in Smithfield, Savanna-la-Mar. As our Health & Safety Officer, you will be the cornerstone of our commitment to a zero-harm environment. You will be responsible for developing, implementing, and enforcing comprehensive health and safety programs that comply with all local and international regulations. This vital role extends beyond mere compliance; it’s about fostering a pervasive safety culture through proactive measures, engaging training, and continuous improvement initiatives. You will work closely with all levels of staff, management, and external stakeholders to identify potential hazards, mitigate risks, and ensure the well-being of every individual on site.

Your day-to-day will involve a diverse range of activities, from conducting thorough risk assessments and incident investigations to leading emergency preparedness drills and delivering impactful safety training sessions. We are looking for someone who can not only identify problems but also devise innovative, practical solutions that are tailored to the unique challenges of an industrial setting. The ideal candidate will possess a strong understanding of industrial processes, equipment, and materials, enabling them to anticipate and address potential safety issues effectively. Key Responsibilities

  • Develop, implement, and continuously review comprehensive Health & Safety policies, procedures, and programs in alignment with local regulations and international best practices (e.g., OSHA, ISO 45001).
  • Conduct regular and thorough site inspections, audits, and risk assessments across the industrial estate to identify potential hazards and non-compliance issues.
  • Investigate all incidents, accidents, and near-misses, determining root causes and recommending effective corrective and preventive actions.
  • Deliver engaging and effective health and safety training sessions to employees at all levels, fostering a proactive safety culture.
  • Ensure strict compliance with all relevant Jamaican occupational health and safety legislation and industry-specific standards.
  • Maintain accurate and up-to-date records, documentation, and reports related to all H&S activities, incidents, and training.
  • Collaborate with management, supervisors, and employees to promote a strong safety culture and ensure effective communication of H&S objectives.
  • Manage and coordinate emergency response plans, including fire safety, first aid, and evacuation procedures.
  • Oversee the proper use, maintenance, and inspection of personal protective equipment (PPE) and other safety apparatus.
  • Advise on health and safety aspects of new projects, equipment, and process changes within the industrial estate.

Required Skills

  • Proven experience in Health & Safety management within an industrial or manufacturing environment.
  • In-depth knowledge of Jamaican occupational health and safety legislation and regulatory requirements.
  • Demonstrable expertise in conducting risk assessments, incident investigations, and safety audits.
  • Strong communication, presentation, and interpersonal skills to effectively train and engage staff.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite and H&S management software.
  • Ability to develop and implement effective safety management systems.
  • Excellent problem-solving and analytical abilities.
  • Valid driver's license.

Preferred Qualifications

  • NEBOSH Diploma or equivalent international safety qualification.
  • Certified First Aid/CPR trainer.
  • Experience with ISO 45001 implementation and auditing.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Occupational Health & Safety, Environmental Science, Engineering, or a related field.
  • Project management certification or experience.
