Job Description
We are seeking an experienced and highly motivated Health & Safety Officer to oversee and manage all aspects of occupational health and safety within a bustling industrial estate in Denham Town, Kingston. This professional role demands a proactive individual committed to fostering a culture of safety, ensuring rigorous compliance with local and international regulations, and strategically minimizing risks across diverse industrial operations. The successful candidate will be instrumental in developing, implementing, and continuously monitoring comprehensive health and safety programs designed to protect personnel, assets, and the environment. You will serve as the primary point of contact for all H&S matters, providing expert guidance and mentorship to management and employees alike, championing best practices from the ground up. Your daily work will involve conducting detailed, proactive risk assessments, meticulously identifying potential hazards, and formulating effective, sustainable control measures to mitigate them. This position requires a profound understanding of complex industrial processes, machinery safety protocols, safe chemical handling procedures, and robust emergency response planning.
As the Health & Safety Officer, you will lead scheduled and unscheduled safety audits and inspections, ensuring that all operational activities strictly adhere to stringent safety standards and legal mandates. A critical part of your role will be to conduct thorough and impartial investigations into all incidents, accidents, and near misses, meticulously determining root causes and implementing robust corrective and preventive actions to avoid any recurrence. You will also be tasked with developing and delivering engaging, impactful safety training sessions for all personnel, from new hires to seasoned staff, promoting heightened awareness and continuous adherence to best practices. Maintaining accurate, comprehensive records of safety performance metrics, incidents, investigations, and training is absolutely crucial for continuous improvement. Key Responsibilities
- Develop, implement, and monitor comprehensive health and safety policies and procedures in line with local and international standards.
- Conduct regular risk assessments, safety audits, and inspections across the industrial estate to identify hazards and ensure compliance.
- Investigate all incidents, accidents, and near misses, determining root causes and recommending corrective actions.
- Design and deliver engaging health and safety training programs for employees and contractors.
- Maintain accurate records of safety performance, incidents, training, and compliance activities.
- Advise management on health and safety matters, legal requirements, and best industry practices.
- Oversee the proper storage, handling, and disposal of hazardous materials.
- Develop and coordinate emergency response plans and evacuation procedures.
- Liaise with regulatory bodies, external auditors, and other stakeholders on H&S issues.
- Promote a positive safety culture through effective communication and engagement initiatives.
Required Skills
- Proven experience as a Health & Safety Officer, preferably in an industrial or manufacturing environment.
- In-depth knowledge of occupational health and safety regulations, standards, and best practices.
- Strong understanding of risk assessment methodologies and hazard identification.
- Excellent communication, interpersonal, and presentation skills.
- Proficiency in incident investigation and root cause analysis.
- Ability to develop and deliver effective safety training programs.
- Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
Preferred Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Occupational Health and Safety, Environmental Science, Engineering, or a related field.
- NEBOSH International General Certificate (IGC) or equivalent certification.
- Experience with ISO 45001 implementation and auditing.
- First Aid and CPR certification.
- Knowledge of local Jamaican H&S legislation and environmental regulations.
