Job Description

Career.zycto is seeking a dedicated and experienced Health & Safety Officer to join our dynamic team, focusing on an industrial estate environment within Havendale, St. Andrew. This pivotal role requires a seasoned professional passionate about creating and maintaining a culture of safety excellence. You will be instrumental in developing, implementing, and monitoring comprehensive occupational health and safety programs that comply with local regulations and international best practices, specifically tailored for an industrial setting.

As our Health & Safety Officer, you will be the primary advocate for a safe working environment, ensuring that all operational activities within the industrial estate are conducted without risk to personnel, equipment, or the environment. This involves regular site inspections, risk assessments, and the proactive identification of potential hazards. Your expertise will guide us in formulating and delivering targeted safety training programs for all levels of staff, from new hires to management, fostering a deeply ingrained safety-first mindset. You will investigate incidents, near misses, and accidents thoroughly, determining root causes and recommending effective corrective and preventive actions. Moreover, you will maintain meticulous records, prepare comprehensive reports, and serve as the main point of contact for all health and safety-related inquiries, audits, and regulatory interactions.

This role is crucial for ensuring the continuous improvement of our safety management systems. You will play a key part in promoting a positive safety culture, engaging employees in safety initiatives, and ensuring compliance with all relevant Jamaican Occupational Safety and Health (OSH) legislation, as well as industry-specific standards. Key Responsibilities

  • Develop, implement, and monitor occupational health and safety policies and procedures aligned with local regulations and international standards.
  • Conduct regular site inspections and risk assessments within the industrial estate to identify potential hazards and ensure compliance.
  • Investigate all incidents, accidents, and near misses, determining root causes and recommending effective corrective and preventive actions.
  • Design and deliver engaging safety training programs for all employees, ensuring understanding and adherence to safety protocols.
  • Maintain accurate records of safety inspections, incidents, training, and compliance activities.
  • Ensure all operations comply with relevant Jamaican OSH legislation and industry-specific safety standards.
  • Manage emergency preparedness plans, including fire safety, first aid, and evacuation procedures.
  • Collaborate with management and employees to promote a positive safety culture and foster continuous improvement in safety performance.
  • Prepare comprehensive reports on safety performance, incidents, and audit findings for management review.
  • Advise on the selection and proper use of personal protective equipment (PPE).

Required Skills

  • Proven experience as a Health & Safety Officer in an industrial environment.
  • Thorough knowledge of occupational health and safety principles, practices, and legislation (e.g., Jamaican OSH Act).
  • Proficiency in conducting risk assessments, hazard identification, and incident investigation.
  • Excellent communication, presentation, and interpersonal skills.
  • Strong organizational and record-keeping abilities.
  • Ability to develop and deliver effective safety training programs.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).

Preferred Qualifications

  • Certification in Occupational Health and Safety (e.g., NEBOSH, OSHA, IOSH).
  • Bachelor's degree in Occupational Health and Safety, Environmental Science, Engineering, or a related field.
  • Experience with environmental management systems (EMS).
  • First Aid and CPR certification.
  • Familiarity with ISO 45001 standards.
