Career.zycto is seeking a highly skilled and experienced Health & Safety Officer to lead our safety initiatives within our bustling industrial estate in Mineral Heights, May Pen. This professional role demands a proactive, detail-oriented individual passionate about fostering a culture of health, safety, and environmental compliance. Key Responsibilities
- Conduct comprehensive risk assessments, safety audits, and inspections across the industrial estate to identify hazards and implement effective corrective actions.
- Develop, implement, and maintain Health & Safety policies, procedures, and Safe Work Methods (SWMs) in accordance with Jamaican OHS regulations and international standards (e.g., ISO 45001).
- Lead thorough incident investigations, root cause analysis, and ensure timely reporting to management and regulatory bodies, implementing preventative measures to avoid recurrence.
- Design and deliver engaging H&S training programs for all levels of staff, promoting safety awareness, compliance, and best practices throughout the organization.
- Manage and monitor the use of personal protective equipment (PPE), ensuring proper selection, availability, and mandatory usage.
- Oversee emergency preparedness plans, including fire safety, first aid, and evacuation procedures, conducting regular drills and reviews to ensure readiness.
- Maintain accurate H&S records, prepare detailed reports on safety performance, compliance status, and incident statistics for management review and strategic planning.
- Collaborate proactively with department heads, contractors, and other stakeholders to integrate safety into all operational aspects, fostering a strong, company-wide safety culture.
- Stay abreast of changes in H&S legislation, industry best practices, and emerging risks, recommending and implementing necessary updates to policies and procedures.
- Ensure environmental compliance with relevant regulations, contributing to sustainable and responsible practices within the industrial estate operations.
Required Skills
- Bachelor's Degree or Diploma in Occupational Health & Safety, Environmental Science, or a related field
- Minimum of 4 years of progressive experience in a Health & Safety role, preferably within an industrial or manufacturing environment
- Certified OSHA General Industry or Construction Safety Specialist (or equivalent, e.g., NEBOSH, IOSH)
- Thorough knowledge of Jamaican OHS legislation and regulations
- Proven experience in conducting risk assessments, incident investigations, and safety audits
- Excellent communication, presentation, and interpersonal skills
- Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint)
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience with ISO 45001 implementation and auditing
- Certified First Aid and/or Fire Safety Trainer
- Experience in environmental management systems (e.g., ISO 14001)
- Familiarity with specific industrial processes such as heavy machinery operation, chemical handling, or logistics
- Leadership experience in managing a small safety team or mentoring junior staff
