Career.zycto is seeking a highly skilled and dedicated Health & Safety Officer to lead our commitment to occupational safety within a dynamic industrial estate in Santa Cruz, St. Elizabeth. This professional role is pivotal in safeguarding our most valuable asset – our people – and ensuring that all operations adhere to the highest standards of health, safety, and environmental compliance.

As a Health & Safety Officer, you will be the cornerstone of our safety culture, responsible for developing, implementing, and monitoring comprehensive safety programs across diverse industrial operations. This involves much more than just compliance; it’s about fostering a proactive safety mindset, identifying potential hazards before they become incidents, and empowering every team member to contribute to a secure working environment. You will be instrumental in conducting thorough risk assessments, investigating incidents with meticulous attention to detail, and spearheading initiatives to mitigate risks effectively.

Your daily activities will span a wide range, from conducting regular site inspections and audits to ensuring all machinery and processes meet safety specifications. Key Responsibilities

  • Develop, implement, and monitor Health & Safety policies and procedures in line with national and international standards.
  • Conduct comprehensive risk assessments and job hazard analyses across the industrial estate and implement control measures.
  • Lead incident investigations, root cause analyses, and implement corrective and preventive actions to avoid recurrence.
  • Ensure strict compliance with Jamaican occupational safety and health regulations (OSHA) and environmental standards.
  • Design and deliver engaging health and safety training programs for all employees, contractors, and visitors.
  • Perform regular site inspections, audits, and safety walkthroughs to identify potential hazards and non-compliance issues.
  • Maintain accurate records of H&S incidents, training, inspections, and safety performance metrics.
  • Oversee emergency preparedness plans, including fire drills, first aid, and evacuation procedures.
  • Advise management on health, safety, and environmental best practices and technological advancements.
  • Collaborate with various departments to integrate safety into all aspects of operations and new projects.

Required Skills

  • Proven experience as a Health & Safety Officer, preferably in an industrial or manufacturing setting.
  • In-depth knowledge of Jamaican occupational safety and health legislation and environmental regulations.
  • Strong expertise in risk assessment methodologies and incident investigation techniques.
  • Excellent communication, interpersonal, and presentation skills to effectively train and engage staff.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite and H&S management software/systems.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a fast-paced industrial environment.
  • NEBOSH General Certificate, OSHA 30-Hour, or equivalent recognized H&S qualification.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Occupational Health & Safety, Environmental Science, Engineering, or a related field.
  • Professional membership with a relevant H&S body (e.g., IOSH, ASSP).
  • Experience with ISO 45001 (Occupational Health and Safety Management System) implementation and auditing.
  • Certified First Aid and CPR instructor.
  • Fluency in local Patois for effective communication with a diverse workforce.
