Job Description

This role demands a meticulous and proactive Health & Safety Officer to oversee and enhance safety protocols within a bustling industrial estate in Linstead, St. Catherine. As a pivotal member of our team at Career.zycto, you will be instrumental in developing, implementing, and monitoring robust occupational health and safety programs that comply with local regulations and international best practices. Your primary objective will be to safeguard the well-being of all personnel, prevent workplace incidents, and ensure operational continuity through rigorous risk management.

You will conduct regular site inspections, identify potential hazards, and implement corrective actions promptly. This includes comprehensive risk assessments for various industrial processes, machinery, and equipment, ensuring all operations adhere to strict safety standards. A key part of your role will involve leading investigations into accidents and near-misses, identifying root causes, and formulating preventative strategies. You will be responsible for maintaining accurate safety records, preparing detailed reports, and presenting findings to management and relevant stakeholders.

Beyond compliance, we seek a professional who is passionate about cultivating a strong safety culture. This involves designing and delivering engaging safety training sessions for employees at all levels, covering topics such as hazard communication, emergency procedures, personal protective equipment (PPE) usage, and specific machinery safety. You will act as a primary point of contact for all safety-related inquiries, providing expert guidance and fostering a proactive approach to health and safety among the workforce.

Working closely with operations, human resources, and facility management, you will advise on new equipment installations, process changes, and facility modifications to ensure inherent safety. Your expertise will also extend to emergency preparedness, developing and coordinating drills for fire, natural disasters, and other potential incidents. Key Responsibilities

  • Develop, implement, and maintain comprehensive occupational health and safety (OHS) programs in alignment with Jamaican legislation and international standards (e.g., OSHA, NEBOSH).
  • Conduct regular site inspections and audits to identify potential hazards and ensure compliance with safety regulations and company policies.
  • Perform detailed risk assessments for all operational activities, machinery, and work environments, recommending and implementing control measures.
  • Lead investigations into accidents, incidents, and near-misses, determining root causes and developing corrective and preventive actions.
  • Design and deliver effective safety training programs for employees, supervisors, and contractors on various OHS topics, including emergency procedures, PPE, and hazard communication.
  • Maintain accurate records of safety inspections, incidents, training, and regulatory documentation.
  • Prepare and submit comprehensive safety reports to management, outlining performance, compliance status, and improvement recommendations.
  • Advise on safety aspects of new equipment, facility modifications, and process changes.
  • Manage and coordinate emergency response plans, including fire drills, first aid, and evacuation procedures.
  • Promote a proactive safety culture through communication, engagement, and leadership.
  • Liaise with external regulatory bodies and ensure all permits and licenses are up to date.

Required Skills

  • Proven expertise in occupational health and safety management within an industrial or manufacturing setting.
  • In-depth knowledge of Jamaican OHS legislation and regulations.
  • Strong understanding of risk assessment methodologies and hazard control principles.
  • Excellent communication, presentation, and interpersonal skills to conduct training and influence stakeholders.
  • Proficiency in incident investigation techniques and root cause analysis.
  • Ability to develop and implement effective safety management systems.
  • Competency in preparing detailed reports and maintaining meticulous records.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).

Preferred Qualifications

  • NEBOSH International General Certificate (IGC) or equivalent recognized safety qualification.
  • OSHA certifications (e.g., OSHA 30-Hour General Industry).
  • Bachelor's degree in Occupational Health & Safety, Environmental Science, Engineering, or a related field.
  • Experience with ISO 45001 implementation and auditing.
  • First Aid and CPR certification.
  • Membership in a professional safety organization (e.g., IOSH, ASSP).
