Job Description

Career.zycto is seeking a dedicated and experienced Health & Safety Officer to lead and champion our safety initiatives within our bustling industrial estate in Flankers, Montego Bay. This professional role is pivotal in ensuring a safe and healthy workplace for all employees, contractors, and visitors, upholding the highest standards of occupational health and safety. You will be instrumental in developing, implementing, and monitoring comprehensive safety programs tailored to the unique challenges of a diverse industrial environment, encompassing manufacturing, logistics, and administrative functions. The successful candidate will be a proactive problem-solver, a skilled communicator, and a vigilant advocate for safety culture.

Your day-to-day will involve hands-on engagement with various departments, conducting thorough risk assessments, facilitating safety training sessions, and ensuring strict compliance with local and international occupational health and safety regulations. You will investigate incidents, identify root causes, and implement corrective actions to prevent recurrence. This role requires a professional with a keen eye for detail, excellent organizational skills, and the ability to influence positive safety behaviors across all levels of the organization. Key Responsibilities

  • Develop, implement, and maintain comprehensive occupational health and safety (OHS) policies and procedures in line with Jamaican regulations and international best practices.
  • Conduct regular safety inspections, audits, and risk assessments across the industrial estate to identify potential hazards and recommend corrective actions.
  • Organize and deliver safety training programs, workshops, and awareness campaigns for all employees, contractors, and visitors.
  • Investigate all incidents, accidents, and near-misses, preparing detailed reports, identifying root causes, and implementing preventative measures.
  • Ensure compliance with all relevant OHS legislation, standards, and codes of practice.
  • Manage the maintenance and calibration of safety equipment, including PPE, fire extinguishers, and first aid supplies.
  • Lead the development and implementation of emergency response plans, including fire drills and evacuation procedures.
  • Advise management on health and safety matters, providing expert guidance on risk mitigation strategies.
  • Maintain accurate records of safety inspections, incidents, training, and compliance activities.
  • Promote a positive safety culture through consistent communication and employee engagement initiatives.

Required Skills

  • Proven experience as a Health & Safety Officer in an industrial or manufacturing environment.
  • In-depth knowledge of Jamaican occupational health and safety regulations and compliance requirements.
  • Strong understanding of risk assessment methodologies and hazard control principles.
  • Excellent communication, interpersonal, and presentation skills.
  • Ability to conduct effective safety training and foster a strong safety culture.
  • Proficiency in incident investigation and root cause analysis.
  • Competency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
  • Certification in First Aid and CPR.
  • Strong organizational and documentation skills.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Occupational Health and Safety, Environmental Science, Engineering, or a related field.
  • NEBOSH General Certificate or equivalent professional safety qualification.
  • Experience with ISO 45001 implementation and auditing.
  • Professional membership with a relevant safety body.
  • Knowledge of environmental management systems.
